Engineers with the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) are raised out of the John Day Dam navigation lock, located on the Columbia River near Rufus, Oregon, July 26 after inspecting the locks upstream gate following a malfunction due to a broken guide wheel. While the Corps works to fix the 215,000-pound vertical lift gate, its continuing to pass vessels through the lock using a floating bulkheada wall that can be moved in and out of place with a tugboat and essentially used as a temporary gate. Currently, vessel lockages, which typically take about 45 minutes, are taking twice as long. The guide wheels, two of which are attached to each side of the gate, act as rollers that keep the gate aligned as it moves up and down through its normal range of motion during lockages.

The Orion crew access arm is being moved by crane onto a flatbed truck at Precision Fabricating and Cleaning in Cocoa, Florida. The crew access arm will be transported to a storage location near NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Later this month, the arm will be transported to the mobile launcher (ML) tower at the center. The crew access arm will be located at about the 274-foot level on the tower. It will rotate from its retracted position and interface with the Orion crew hatch location to provide entry to the Orion crew module. The Ground Systems Development and Operations Program is overseeing installation of umbilicals and launch accessories on the ML tower.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In an area near S.R. 520 in Orange County, Florida, workers help position a radome onto concrete blocks. The radome will be lifted onto a steel tower constructed for a Doppler weather radar for the 45th Weather Squadron. The new site replaces one at Patrick Air Force Base and will be used by NASA's Kennedy Space Center, the U.S. Air Force's 45th Space Wing and their customers. The facility will be able to monitor weather conditions directly above and surrounding the launch pads at Kennedy. The weather radar is essential in issuing lightning and other severe weather warnings and vital in evaluating lightning launch commit criteria. Replacing what was installed 25 years ago at Patrick Air Force Base, the new radar includes Doppler capability to detect winds and identify the type, size and number of precipitation particles. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In Launch Complex 39 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the walls for the Propellants North Administrative and Maintenance Facility get a layer of high-density foam insulation.A tilt-up construction method is being used to erect a THERMOMASS concrete wall insulation system for the facility's walls. In this approach, the exterior layer of concrete for the wall panels is poured and leveled on the building's footprint. Then, prefabricated, predrilled insulation sheets are arranged on top of the unhardened concrete, and connectors, designed to hold the sandwiched layers of concrete and insulation secure, are inserted through the predrilled holes. Next, the structural wythe is poured. Once cured, these panels are lifted upright to form the building's envelope. The facility will have a two-story administrative building to house managers, mechanics and technicians who fuel spacecraft at Kennedy adjacent to an 1,800-square-foot single-story shop to store cry

At Launch Pad 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, large segments of the support hardware for a new flame deflector have been lowered into position in the flame trench. The new flame deflector will be positioned about six feet south of the shuttle-era flame deflectors position. During liftoff of NASAs Space Launch System, the rockets flame and energy will be diverted to the north side of the flame trench. The north side of the deflector will be protected by a NASA standard coating. The south side of the deflector will not be slanted and will have no lining. The new design will provide easier access for inspection, maintenance and repair. The Ground Systems Development and Operations (GSDO) Program at Kennedy is managing the installation of the flame deflector for Exploration Mission 1, deep space missions, and NASA's Journey to Mars.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, new, hurricane-rated window systems for the Launch Control Center's four Firing Rooms and the vestibule areas between Firing Rooms 1 & 2 and Firing Rooms 3 & 4 are being installed. In order to avoid operational impacts, the new windows are being installed on the outside of the existing windows, enclosing the space formerly occupied by the louvers, and the old windows will remain in place until the new windows are completely installed and leak tested. This approach will continue to keep the firing rooms from being exposed to the elements.

On July 15, Deputy Commanding General Heitkamp visited the Pittsburgh District to tour the construction work at Charleroi Locks and Dam 4 in Belle Vernon, PA. The construction work is part of the Lower Monongahela River project, which will replace the nearly 100-year-old fixed-crest dam with a gated dam at Braddock Locks and Dam 2, remove Locks and Dam 3 in Elizabeth and construct two larger locks at Charleroi Locks and Dam 4 in Belle Vernon. The Braddock, Elizabeth and Charleroi locks are the three oldest operating-navigation facilities on the Monongahela River and experience the highest commercial-traffic volume in the entire Monongahela River Navigation System.

A contract, totaling $11,964,432.87, was awarded June 9, 2022, to L.S. Black Constructors to build the fiscal year 2022 Transient Training Brigade Headquarters project at Fort McCoy. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska District is constructing a new Child Development Center for Soldiers and their families on Fort Wainwright. The project is in the vertical construction phase with the new facility beginning to take shape which will have a design capacity for more than 300 children ages 6 weeks through 5 years. It will include 12 rooms for infants and toddlers, nine rooms for preschool children, four general activity rooms, kitchen, laundry, reception and staff lounge. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - A technician works on the removal of a full-size replica of a space shuttle external fuel tank from the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex as the space-themed attraction makes way for a new exhibit featuring space shuttle Atlantis, which is currently undergoing preparations to go on public display. The tank is being placed into temporary storage at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The tank was part of a mockup of the external tank and two solid rocket boosters at the visitor complex that were used to show visitors the size of actual space shuttle components. A space shuttle rode piggyback on the tank and boosters at liftoff and during the ascent into space. The tank, which held propellants for the shuttle's three main engines, was not reused, but burned up in the atmosphere and fell into the ocean.

At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, construction workers on the deck of the mobile launcher install the final four vehicle support posts. A total of eight support posts are being installed to support the load of the Space Launch System's (SLS) solid rocket boosters, with four posts for each of the boosters. The support posts are about five feet tall and each weigh about 10,000 pounds. The posts will structurally support the SLS rocket through T-0 and liftoff, and will drop down before vehicle liftoff to avoid contact with the flight hardware. The Ground Systems Development and Operations Program is overseeing installation of the support posts to prepare for the launch of the Orion spacecraft atop the SLS rocket.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - A backhoe is being used during repair work under way on the flame trench on Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Damage to the trench occurred during the launch of Discovery on the STS-124 mission. A 75- by 20-foot section of the east wall was destroyed and debris scattered as far as the pad perimeter fence. Repairs are expected to be completed before the targeted Oct. 8 launch of Atlantis on the STS-125 mission.
