Date: 1555-1629.Attributed to Camillo Procaccini by Jacob Bean, the rare subject of this drawing with 'The Birth of Saint Francis' has been identified by Nancy Ward Neilson (1979): Francis's mother, a lady of high station, wished to give birth to her first child in the stable of the family house in recollection of the humble birthplace of Jesus. In the background is visible the mysterious pilgrim visitor who, according to the Franciscan legend, announced the saintly vocation of the newborn son. Another Lombard representation of this story is a painting by Giovanni Mauro della Rovere (1575-1640), now in the Prepositurale di Saint Marco, Milan (see: Dipinti della Pinacoteca di Brera in deposito nelle chiese della Lombardia, 1, Milan 1969, p. 42, fig. 19). The Wedding Feast at Cana. Lavinia Fontana (Italian, 1552 - 1614) about 1575-1580 A group of figures sit at a long table in the foreground, while behind them stairs rise to a semicircular portico. This drawing, featuring a scene of the biblical wedding feast at Cana, is the principal compositional study that Lavinia Fontana made to prepare her painting of the same subject, also at the Getty (2022.28). Close looking and technical study of the painting and drawing reveal details of Lavinias creative process. Her father, Prospero, was a painter too, and she based her composition on drawings available to her in his studio. Yet she made myriad changes to create a successful scene on the copper support when she began to paint. These included enlarging the principal figures of Christ and his mother, seated at the table, modifying the vessels on the credenza at left and the wine amphorae in front of the table, and even elongating the figures in the lower right corner.
