Reportage on the TIRO lab (Oncology Imaging and Radiotherapy Transporters), an interdisciplinary structure within the Medicine Department of Nice University in France, grouping clinicians and biologists. The fundamental research is devoted to providing answers to the clinicians needs. One of the labs aims is to develop a precise molecular diagnosis for cancer, by identifying its metabolome from samples taken. The molecular characteristics of the tumour should enable the oncologist to provide treatment adapted to each patient. Proteomics: identification of proteins present in the samples. The electrophoresis gel bands containing proteins are recovered and placed in tubes.

In this photo, science tubes containing bacterial cells are being prepped for cleaning as part of the Dynamics of Microbiomes in Space (DynaMoS) experiment inside the Space Station Processing Facility at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 11, 2022. Once clean, the cells will be moved to a larger space for continued growth in order to generate enough biomass to inoculate the soil that will be used in the experiment. The DynaMoS experiment will launch on SpaceXs 25th cargo resupply services mission to examine how microgravity affects metabolic interactions in communities of soil microbes. This will help NASA understand the function of soil microorganisms in space versus on Earth and how they can be used to enhance plant growth for crew consumption during long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars. Reportage on the Vaccine Research Institutes (VRI) immunomonitoring platform. The Vaccine Research Institutes aim is to speed up the development of an HIV vaccine. It stems from the ANRSs (French national AIDS and hepatitis research agency) vaccine programme. Research is carried out on the mononuclear cells in the blood. The lab receives blood samples from people who have, and havent had the vaccine. The blood cells are cultured then brought into contact with the antigenic peptide. The tubes are then centrifuged to collect the cell residue and extract the RNA from the cells. The RNA allows the researchers to discover whether the cells (vaccinated or not) express the necessary genes to produce immune response proteins. The vaccines efficiency can then be gauged.

jsc2018e040456 (4/30/2018) --- A Researcher at NASA's Johnson Space Center perform DNA and RNA sequencing on microbes as part of the Biomolecule Extraction and Sequencing Technology (BEST) experiment. The same sequencing procedure is performed in orbit aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and the results are compared to those on the ground. This will provide better insight into the effects of the spaceflight environment on microbial life.
