Portrait of Charles Meryon 1853 Félix Bracquemond French Portraiture was a common means of showing friendship and respect among artists. Printmaking was especially well suited to this practice owing to its small scale, comparatively low production cost, and privately viewable format. Bracquemond represented Meryon twice during his prolific career, commemorating the friendship that he shared with the elder artist. The first of these prints, this etching originally belonged to a series of portraits Bracquemond produced for personal interest rather than exhibition or sale. Meryon is shown at the height of his career and looks toward the viewer with a direct and sober gaze that suggests respectability. The expressive style, produced with spare but clear lines, suggests that the work is as much a statement on the professional status of its producer as its subject.. Portrait of Charles Meryon 384061

Portrait of Doctor Gachet or Man with a Pipe 1890 Vincent van Gogh Van Gogh made this printhis only etchingjust six weeks before his death. In May 1890, Van Gogh left the asylum in Saint-Rémy for Auvers-sur-Oise, where he was under the care of Dr. Paul Ferdinand Gachet. The doctor was an amateur etcher, who signed his works "Van Ryssel." He provided Van Gogh with an etching plate and needle and the opportunity to use the press in his home. The artist chose to etch Gachet’s portrait, which he also painted twice in oil (Private Collection, Tokyo and Musée d’Orsay, Paris). This impression is inscribed on the inside of the folded sheet as an artist’s proof printed by Van Ryssel/Gachet and is richly inked and selectively wiped. Van Gogh expressed enthusiasm for the medium and wrote to his brother Theo of his desire to continue to collaborate with Gachet to create more etchings based on his paintings from the south of France. Regrettably, his death by suicide on July 29, 1890 prevented him

Akbar (Urdu: جلال الدین محمد اکبر , Hindi: लालुद्दीन मुहम्मद अकबर, Jalāl ud-Dīn Muhammad Akbar), also known as Shahanshah Akbar-e-Azam or Akbar the Great (25 October 1542 - 27 October 1605), was the third Mughal Emperor. He was of Timurid descent; the son of Emperor Humayun, and the grandson of Emperor Babur, the ruler who founded the Mughal dynasty in India. At the end of his reign in 1605 the Mughal empire covered most of the northern and central India. Akbar was thirteen years old when he ascended the Mughal throne in Delhi (February 1556), following the death of his father Humayun. During his reign, he eliminated military threats from the powerful Pashtun descendants of Sher Shah Suri, and at the Second Battle of Panipat he decisively defeated the newly self-declared Hindu king Hemu. It took him nearly two more decades to consolidate his power and bring all the parts of northern and central India into his direct realm.
