A Chinese woman drinks a bowl of saloop or salep at a stall in Smithfield market. A vendor in hat, coat and boots sits next to a saloop tank with spigot at a table with bowls and cups. Saloop was a hot or cold beverage made from Orchis macula, sugar and milk. It was sold from midnight to dawn as a hangover cure. The most famous shop was Reid's Coffee Shop on Fleet Street, 1719 to 1833. Smithfield bargains and Smithfield saloop.
