Blue #4 Georgia O'Keeffe (American, 1887-1986). Blue #4, 1916. Watercolor on paper, 15 15/16 x 10 15/16 in. (40.5 x 27.8 cm). In her early abstractions, OKeeffe rendered the same soft, flowing organic forms as she did in her dress. Her rounded forms also have a kinship with the plant-form vocabularies popularized by the international Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements. When Alfred Stieglitz saw her first abstractions, he is famously said to have exclaimed, “Finally, a woman on paper,” and in 1916 and again in 1917, he hung some of them in his gallery at 291 Fifth Avenue. Sunset Sky. Artist: John Frederick Kensett (American, Cheshire, Connecticut 1816-1872 New York). Dimensions: 20 x 32 in. (50.8 x 81.3 cm). Date: 1872.This lovingly wrought study, perhaps set down in direct witness but more likely freshly recollected, was never developed into a finished painting, but became the obvious source of the artist's "Sunset". Along with "Sunset on the Sea" and a few other pictures of his late career, Kensett uncharacteristically indulged a warm, highly saturated palette at variance with the pearly gray tonality of his signature style. At the acme of an enviously successful career and in the relative privacy of his island studio in Long Island Sound, Kensett may well have felt a license that he had not previously to broaden, in his typically measured terms, his aesthetic vocabulary--here to include the richly chromatic effects of J. Don Ignacio Leonel Gómez Cervantes Mexican. Don Ignacio Leonel Gómez Cervantes, 1788. Oil on canvas, 40 1/2 x 32 1/2in. (102.9 x 82.6cm). Painted in two major colonial American centers, these portraits from Boston and Mexico City (then New Spain) share a formality of pose and an emphasis on fine costume that reveal a common source in European portraiture. John Haskins holds his hand on his hip, in a pose of authority found in Elizabethan portraits. Nevertheless, this upright barrel maker known as Honest John Haskins” was a modest patron when compared to his wealthy and ambitious Mexican counterpart. The inscription at the bottom of Don Ignacio Leonel Gómez Cervantes’s portrait lists honors and inherited titles that explicitly identify him as a descendant of an aristocratic Spanish American family. The addition to the Museum's collection of this and one other sketchbook (1992.2.1) of New England and Pennsylvania landscape and marine subjects by Richards virtually completes a representation of the range of the artist's graphic achievement. The books are remarkable for both highly finished compositions and for pages of rapid notes probably taken during strolls through the countryside. The pages testify to Richard's tireless pleasure in observing nature, to the sketchbooks utility as a rehearsal place for his hand, and to the vivid impressions he could produce with the simplest of means. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.
