Date: ca. 1917.In February 1917, Demuth arrived in Bermuda for a month or so, where he joined his friend, the painter Marsden Hartley, who was staying there for a longer time. In one of Hartley's letters to Stieglitz he describes the earthly paradise that Demuth was soon to see: "I like the suggestion of the orient in the voluptuousness of vegetation about - the large red hibiscus blossoms - ...and the sensuous banana trees are every where in evidence - It all suggests sic the gold - frankincense & myrth of the East for there is such opulence of perfume and of spicy fragrances and the people are at once gentle and kindly..." Cloud Study 1830-35 John Constable On a sketchbook page worked outdoors, Constable captures a September sun sinking through clouds. The artists studies of Englands changeable skies are considered among his most characteristic works, part of a systematic and pioneering effort across decades to record varying weather conditions at different times of day. The present Met collection work is an exciting rediscovery because most surviving cloud studies, whether in oil or watercolor, were bequeathed to the Victoria and Albert Museum by the artists daughter. The exact subject and date remain to be established, although the month (September) is affirmed by a fragmentary inscription at upper right. It may be a view west toward Harrow from Hampstead, where the artist lived part of each year to bolster his wifes fragile health.. Cloud Study.
