Influenced by the works of James McNeill Whistler, Thomas Wilmer Dewing gravitated to the pastel medium for its evocative qualities, which were well suited to the pale, introspective female subjects he favored. Dewing adopted Whistlers preference for assertively dark papers, but he far exceeded Whistler in his exploitation of the mediums veil-like effects to evoke a sense of vagueness and immateriality. Utagawa Toyokuni (1769 in Edo - 24 February 1825 in Edo), also often referred to as Toyokuni I to distinguish him from the members of his school who took over his gō (art-name) after he died, was a great master of ukiyo-e, known in particular for his kabuki actor prints. He was the second head of the renowned Utagawa school of Japanese woodblock artists, and was the artist who really moved it to the position of great fame and power it occupied for the rest of the nineteenth century.

Nude Figure Charles Herbert Arthur Chaplin (Watford, England, 1907 - 1987) 1935 Charles Chaplin was born on 8th June 1825 in Andelys, France. In 1840 Chaplin enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he studied under Michel-Martin Drolling. He exhibited his work from 1840 and from 1847 exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. He is best known for his delicate, pastel coloured depictions of women in diaphanous clothing. One entitled "Aurora" was refused as scandalous by the Salon jury in 1859 after which the Comte de Nieuwerkerke imposed an exhibition ban on this painting, although this was later overturned by Napoleon III. Charles Chaplin subsequently became a popular painter at the French Court in the 1860's. He was knighted in 1878 and in 1881 was appointed a Commander of the Legion d'Honneur Chaplin led a painting studio which was reserved for women only. He taught, amongst others, Marie Helene Aarestrup, Louise Abbéma and Mary Cassatt. Nude
