KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- At a lab at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Kevin Wyckoff, an aerospace technician with the United Launch Alliance, inserts an electrical wiring harness into a replacement feed-through connector during preparations to solder the pins to the socket of the connector. The connector will later be installed in the external fuel tank for space shuttle Atlantis' STS-122 mission. The technician performed this exacting task on the Centaur upper stage for Atlas and Titan launches in 1994 and was specifically chosen for the task. Soldering the connector pins and sockets together addresses the most likely cause of a problem in the engine cutoff sensor system, or ECO system. Some of the tank's ECO sensors failed during propellant tanking for launch attempts on Dec. 6 and Dec. 9. Results of a tanking test on Dec. 18 pointed to an open circuit in the feed-through connector wiring, which is located at the base of the tank. The feed-through connector passes the wires from

Ross, mission specialist, holds up two incompatible connections involved in one of the STS-88 detailed test objectives (DTO), this one having to do with the crew's drinking water. The proper counterpart was later located and the connection was successfully accomplished. Astronaut James H. Newman, mission specialist, is at left background. DTO 691 is an in cabin experiment dealing with a low-iodine residual system. Newly developed technology replacing the Galley Iodine Removal System (GIRA) is expected to reduce the concentration of iodine in the Shuttle's potable water system. Displaying a sense of humor, the commander asked astronaut Story Musgrave, who is bald, to address this visual during a briefing with Johnson Space Center (JSC) employees on Jan. 14, 1997. Equal to the task, Musgrave cracked a number of bald jokes and remarked that it was much easier to polish a head in zero gravity than to wash one.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- On the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, STS-122 Mission Specialist Rex Walheim heads for the plane for the return trip to Houston. The crew is flying back to Houston after launch of space shuttle Atlantis was delayed when a failure occurred in a fuel sensor system while the vehicle's external fuel tank was being filled. One of the four engine cutoff, or ECO, sensors inside the liquid hydrogen section of the tank gave a false reading and NASA's current Launch Commit Criteria require that all four sensors function properly. The sensor system is one of several that protect the shuttle's main engines by triggering their shut down if fuel runs unexpectedly low. Space shuttle Atlantis' STS-122 mission now is targeted to launch no earlier than Jan. 2. The liftoff date depends on the resolution of the problem in the fuel sensor system.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - A KSC employee uses a clean-air shower before entering a clean room. Streams of pressurized air directed at the occupant from nozzles in the chamber's ceiling and walls are designed to dislodge particulate matter from hair, clothing and shoes. The adhesive mat on the floor captures soil from shoe soles, as well as particles that fall on its surface. Particulate matter has the potential to contaminate the space flight hardware being stored or processed in the clean room. The shower is part of KSC's Foreign Object Debris (FOD) control program, an important safety initiative.
