Royal Air Force Bomber Command, 1942-1945. The crew of Avro Lancaster B Mark III, ED831 'WS-H', of No 9 Squadron RAF, captained by Squadron Leader A M Hobbs RNZAF, boarding their aircraft at Bardney, Lincolnshire, for a raid on the Zeppelin works at Friedrichshafen, on the shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee), Germany. This special raid introduced novel tactics devised by No. 5 Group, among which was the 'shuttle' technique. After bombing the target, the Lancasters flew to Blida in North Africa, where they were refuelled and rearmed, returning to the United Kingdom two nights later and attacking La Spezia, Italy, en route. Detachment 101, an enigmatic Allied intelligence and special operations unit during World War II, played a pivotal role in the Burmese theater. Operating deep in the jungles of Burma, their mission was multi-faceted, encompassing guerrilla warfare, espionage, and sabotage against Japanese forces. Comprising a diverse group of individuals, from OSS agents to indigenous fighters, they effectively disrupted Japanese supply lines, gathered critical intelligence, and supported resistance movements.

Paratroops in Training at the R.A.F. Parachute School, Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire.This R.A.F. Parachute training school, which trains all British airborne troops, has now completed 500,000 jumps. Since the school was formed in 1940 improve men's in technique and equipment have transformed what was originally regarded as a rather hazardous and frightening experience into something common place. During the peak years for the training of parachutists, 1943-45, the number of jumps at the school averaged about 110, 000 a year. Up to the end of 1945 three was one fatal accident in every 8,800 jumps. September 11, 1951.

Britain's first nuclear weapon's test took place on May 15th 1957, when a 'nuclear device' was successfully exploded high in the air over Christmas Island in the Central Pacific. It was dropped from a four engined RAF Valiant jet bomber, captained by Wing Commander K.G Hubbard, seen here entering his aircraft followed by members of his crew. 15th May 1957

Royal Air Force- Operations in the Middle East and North Africa, 1939-1943. Major G J 'Lemmie' le Mesurier, Officer Commanding No. 1 Squadron SAAF, standing by his Hawker Hurricane Mark IIB, BG971 'AX-V', at LG 92, Egypt. On 3 July 1942 le Mesurier, flying BG971, led eleven Hurricanes to intercept a dive-bombing raid in the El Alamein area. While the aircraft of No. 274 Squadron RAF provided top cover the South African Hurricanes attacked a large formation of Junkers Ju 87Bs and succeeded in shooting down thirteen in what was to become known as the Alamein 'Stuka Party'. The following day, le Mesurier was himself shot down and wounded. He did not return to the Squadron until the following September.

RAF Stirlings Fly Czechoslovak Orphans To Great Britain RAF Stirlings were used to relieve some of the suffering of the war. As well as returning Czechoslovaks to their own country, the Stirlings also returned to Britain with hundreds of Czechoslovak children, orphans who had been in concentration camps during the German occupation and who were being brought to England for rehabilitation. This image shows a Stirling returning to the RAF station at Crosby-on-Eden, Carlisle, with children being lifted out of the aircraft.
