Detachment 101, an enigmatic Allied intelligence and special operations unit during World War II, played a pivotal role in the Burmese theater. Nazi Raider Crippled By R.A.F. Fighters Crashes. The Nazi bomber on its nose after the crash. A German Heinkel bomber crashed on the north-east coast after it had been crippled by the fire of Royal Air force fighters which engaged it after the enemy had appeared near the Firth of Forth. Two other Nazi raiders were badly damaged by British filters when attacks were made on shipping off the north-east coast. March 1, 1940.

Royal Air Force Operations in the Far East, 1941-1945. Damaged Bristol Beaufighter Mark VIF of No. 177 Squadron RAF parked in a dispersal at Feni, India, after hitting a tree whilst avoiding anti-aircraft fire during an attack on a Japanese-held airfield in Burma. Much of the starboard wingtip was lost and the aileron was jammed but despite this, the pilot, Flying Officer J Lottimer, brought the aircraft back to Feni over a distance of 350 miles, aided by his observer, Flying Officer R A Watson, who helped to counter the strain generated by the jammed aileron.

Royal Air Force 1939-1945- Fighter Command Atrocious weather in the winter of 1944 turned airfields in Belgium and the Netherlands into quagmires. This No 127 Squadron Spitfire XVIE (RR255/9N-Y) has its daily inspection in a sea of mud at Grimbergen (B-60), 9 December. Even the starter trolley in the foreground is receiving attention in this heavily posed scene. The 'E' wing fitted to Spitfire XVIs and later Mk IXs finally did away with the four rifle-calibre machine-guns, replacing them with a pair of .50in Brownings. On 29 December this aircraft was shot down by flak and its pilot mortally wounded.

The crew of Avro Lancaster B Mark III, ED905 'BQ-F' 'Press on regardless', of No. 550 Squadron RAF, pose on their aircraft after it had completed 70 operational sorties, at North Killinghome, Yorkshire. They were to fly ED905's hundredth successful sortie on 4 November 1944. The crew consisted of: captain and pilot, Flight Lieutenant D A Shaw; navigator, Sergeant R Harris; engineer, Pilot Officer C Bruce; air bomber, Flight-Sergeant A Llanwarne; mid-upper gunner, Flight-Sergeant A Buckingham; and rear gunner, Flight-Sergeant E Griffiths.

Two Supermarine Spitfire Mark IIAs of No. 152 Squadron RAF, taking off at Coltishall, Norfolk, with 30-gallon long-range fuel tanks fitted under their port wings. The pilots are the Squadron's Commanding Officer, Squadron Leader J Darwen, and one of his flight commanders, Flight Lieutenant P F Illingworth. The fuel tanks were used to extend the Spitfire's range while the Squadron was involved in escorting bombers on anti-shipping strikes along the Brittany coast and Noth-west France.

Warrant Officer J R Berry (wireless operator) and Flight Sergeant E J Holmes (pilot), an experienced air-sea rescue crew, stand in front of their Supermarine Walrus Mark I, X9506 'C', of 'C' Flight, No. 293 Squadron RAF Detachment at Nettuno, Italy. Berry and Holmes were both recipients of the Distinguished Flying Medal for their work with No. 284 Squadron RAF, and flew several more successful rescue sorties after transferring with their aircraft to 293 Squadron in April 1944. The rescue tally on the X9506's nose shows 23 aircrew extricated from the waters around Italy.

Royal Air Force- Fighter Command, Tactical Air Force, 1943. Badly damaged North American Mustang Mark I, AM104 'L', of No. 268 Squadron RAF, on the ground at Odiham, Hampshire, after returning from a sortie over the Rouen area. The pilot, Flying Officer A R Hill of Norwich, was met by heavy anti-aircraft fire while attacking barges on a canal. Despite losing the rudder controls and the hydraulic system, Hill, brough the aircraft back for a successful landing. AM104 was repaired and later flew with Nos. 414 and 430 Squadrons RCAF before it was again damaged by flak, near Venlo, Holland, on 21 October 1944, and was finally struck off charge.

Royal Air Force 1939-1945- Fighter Command Spitfire IXEs of No 412 Squadron, RCAF, await the start-up signal, Volkel, October 1944. Each aircraft sags under the weight of two wing-mounted 250lb bombs, and a 500-pounder slung below the fuselage. Though never designed for such a role, the Spitfire proved remarkably effective on interdiction sorties against enemy transport and communications.
