Plate: the king Yazdgard I, slaying a stag ca. A.D. 399-420 Sasanian The king as hunter became a standard image on silver plates during the reign of Shapur II (r. 310-379). The motif symbolizes the prowess of Sasanian rulers, and these royal plates were often sent as gifts to neighboring and vassal courts. The scene on this example is striking: the king is depicted standing and slaying a rearing stag, whose protruding tongue indicates that he is either dying or already dead. The king is identifiable as Yazdgard I (r. 399-420) due to his crown, although it is topped with a striated globe rather than the cloth-covered one with which he is normally represented. His beaded skirt resembles those shown on the rock reliefs of Shapur II (r. 310-379), Shapur III (r. 383-388) and Ardashir II (r. 379-383) at Taq-i Bustan, Iran. Date: model ca. 1590-1600 (possibly cast 17th century).This plaquette depicts Venus and Cupid in a landscape, set in an oval, stylized wreath. While Paul Hübner has been identified as the possible author of this piece, it has also been attributed to an anonymous South German artist, possibly from Augsburg and dating from the late sixteenth century. Other versions are in Florence (Museo Stefano Bardini), Lyon (Musée des Beaux-Arts), Munich (Bayerisches Nationalmuseum), and Paris (Musée du Louvre). Shield of Henry II of France (reigned 1547-59) ca. 1555 French The battle scene at the center is thought to depict the victory of Hannibal and the Carthaginians over the Romans in Cannae in 216 B.C., which here could be interpreted as an allusion to the struggle of France against the Holy Roman Empire during the sixteenth century. In the strapwork borders are the intertwined letters: H for Henry II (reigned 1547-59); C for Catherine de Médicis, his queen; and possibly also D for Diane de Poitiers, his mistress. Interspersed with the initials are crescents, the king's personal badge and a reference to the moon goddess Diana and her namesake Diane de Poitiers.The design is very similar to a series of drawings for the decoration of armor attributed to Etienne Delaune, Jean Cousin the Elder, and Baptiste Pellerin, all artists active in Paris.. Marble pillar with Neo-Attic reliefs late 1st century B.C.-early 1st century A.D. Roman A fine example of classicizing art, this marble pillar bears on all four sides reliefs in the Neo-Attic style. The themes are drawn from the world of Dionysus. A flowering acanthus plant carved in low relief occupies one of the long sides, while on the other, in higher relief, two female figures with billowing garments surmount a Silenus herm. Their attributes identify them as Horae, the personifications of the Seasons. At the top is summer holding a garland in one hand and a sheaf of wheat in the other. At the bottom, autumn carries pomegranates and bunches of grapes in the fold of her himation, while a third figure, now missing, most probably represented spring. Date: 2nd century A.D..In antiquity, porphyry was highly regarded as a royal stone, because its color was associated with the regal and, in Roman times, imperial use of purple to symbolize rank and authority. In addition, this very hard stone is found only in the eastern deserts of Egypt, making its extraction and transport extremely difficult and costly. Its use in Roman sculpture and architecture was therefore limited. This massive piece is one of a pair of supports that originally carried a deep oblong water basin, probably located in a major imperial bath complex. Bowl with Face 10th-13th century Byzantine The small slipware bowl, meant for domestic use, shows the face of an unidentified, bearded man on its interior. The work is typical of Byzantine slipware where the red clay body of a vessel was covered with slip (liquid clay) that was then cut away, or incised with lines, to create an image.
