Slaughtering a bull as part of funeral rites 690-645 B.C. Late Period Mentuemhat was the virtual ruler of Thebes alongside the concurrent God's Wife during part of Dynasty 25 and early 26. He constructed a large tomb in the Asasif, as did other major figures of late Dynasty 25 and Dynasty 26, most of the others closely associated with the God's Wife. His huge tomb is sometimes referred to as a palace tomb. It is marked at its eastern end by a large brick pylon with an arch. The actual entry is from a gate and descending entry at the northeast corner of a huge sunken open court west of the pylon. A second smaller open court follows. Subterranean rooms and corridors branch off these courts, and descending corridors continue further west to suites of rooms and the burial chamber, Although parts have long been known, this huge edifice has only been recently completely cleared, and the tomb remains under study.While the stone is poor and the walls of relief decoration in the tomb have great

Relief with a billy goat. Dimensions: H. 32 cm (12 5/8 in.); W. 50 cm (19 11/16 in.). Dynasty: Dynasty 4. Reign: reign of Khufu. Date: ca. 2551-2528 B.C..This section from a procession of goats resembles other goats from Khufu's pyramid complex and is close in style to the cattle of Khufu in 22.1.3a,b. The slightly higher relief of the preserved head allowed the artist to render the animal's knobby facial bones, give added depth to the eye, and emphasize the twisted horns. Possibly the goats on one wall and the cattle on another were being led inward toward the king's offering chapel and represented the offering of meat in perpetuity. Shoulder of a Figure with Blue Drapery 9th-10th century Colored with blue, yellow, black and traces of red, this fragment from a wall painting was excavated from the mound at Nishapur known as Sabz Pushan (the Green Covered). The excavations at Sabz Pushan revealed part of a residential neighborhood dating to the tenth century. This and several similar fragments were found deposited in the bottom of a well dug into the floor of what was likely a domestic unit after having been chipped off a wall and discarded, so their original location is not known. Several are now housed in the Metropolitan Museum, and include 38.40.267, 38.40.268, 38.40.270, 38.40.271.While we can only guess at the scene or scenes to which these fragments of painting belonged, it is clear that the subject matter was figural. In the upper zone you can see a banquet centrally with a richly dressed man surrounded in the middle, surrounded by a few men. To the left of the table you can still see a man in flames, representing hell. The scene is closed on the sides with a column with a staircase next to the right column, from which a person runs. In the foreground are a soldier, four dogs, two of which lick the Lazarus lying on the floor, and some fighting men. Drawing of a Coptic Saint 6th-7th century Late Antique Like most sites in the Theban necropolis, the tomb of Nespekashuty underwent repeated reuse and repurposing through the centuries. Nespekashuty's seventh century BC tomb itself had reused the courtyard and causeway of an early 11th Dynasty (ca. 2030 BC) tomb. Wall decoration with vegetal design ca. 6th century A.D. Sasanian Stucco reliefs were commonly used to decorate the iwans and reception halls of elite Sasanian houses. Many examples were found in excavated houses in the Ctesiphon area including this relief from Maaridh IV consisting of a wavy vine with half palmettes. It was found with a relief with pomegranate designs (now in the Baghdad Museum) and probably formed the border around the edge of a larger pattern. The use of molds to make stuccos allowed for the creation of large scale repetitive patterns such as floral and vegetal motifs. The city of Ctesiphon was located on the east bank of the Tigris River, 20 miles (32 km) south of modern Baghdad in Iraq. It flourished for more than 800 years as the capital of the Parthians and the Sasanians, the last two dynasties to rule the ancient Near East before the Islamic conquest in the seventh century. Relief scene from the tomb of Queen Neferu: fragments from two registers showing male and female attendants moving to the right ca. 2051-2030 B.C. Middle Kingdom Neferu was most likely the first queen of Nebhepetre Mentuhotep II, and may also have been his sister. Her plundered tomb, excavated by the Metropolitan Museum of Art between 1923 and 1931, lay outside the king's temple precinct at Deir el Bahri. It was visited as a shrine in the Eighteenth Dynasty, and at some point it was used as a quarry for the fine limestone covering the walls.The decoration of the funerary apartments consisted almost exclusively of ritual scenes and depictions of sacred objects deriving from local Upper Egyptian iconography. The carving of Queen Neferus surviving reliefs has a captivating otherworldliness, although it is varied in quality. The extenuated proportions of the figures, and the elaborate patterns contrasting with smooth planes, represent the height of the Eleventh Dynasty archaic style. The

Frieze depicting the Eye of Horus or Ra, an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, royal power, and good health

Fragments of plaque with fantastic creatures ca. 8th-7th century B.C. Iran This bronze plaque, now in three pieces, depicts two fantastic creatures in repousse. The creatures, which resemble stylized lions, face each other with their mouths open. They have long, bulbous snouts, round eyes, and spikes running down their backs which may represent manes. More of the creature on the left is preserved, including its hindquarters and the tip of its tail. A border of raised dots is visible at the top and right side of the image.This plaque was excavated at Surkh Dum, a settlement site in Luristan in the Zagros Mountains of western Iran. It was found in a structure interpreted as a sanctuary and was thus probably an offering to a god. Despite being found in Luristan, the style of the plaque is quite different from that of other Iron Age metalwork from the region, suggesting it may be an import.. Attic Red-Figure Lidded Skyphoid Fragment. Attributed to Onesimos, painter (Greek (Attic), active 500 - 480 B.C.) Attributed to Euphronios, potter (Greek (Attic), active 520 - 480 B.C.) about 490 B.C. Fragment of body and edge of lid. Exterior: Theseus (nude, fillet, hair in krobylos) attacking to the right with an axe, reaches forward to clasp the hair on Prokrustes' (bearded, nude, fillet) forehead.
