Pantalone ca. 1790 Royal Porcelain Manufactory, Naples In 1759 the king of Naples succeeded to the Spanish throne as Charles III and, unwilling to abandon his porcelain factory at Capodimonte, literally took it with him: forty-one workers (including Giuseppe Gricci) and several thousand pounds of clay sailed on October 7; the factory buildings and remaining stock were destroyed. It was not until 1771 that Charless son and successor, Ferdinand IV, decided to revive porcelain making in Naples, and he built a new factory near the royal palace. Although Ferdinands was an independent enterprise, it retained some links with Capodimonte. The material, a hard-paste porcelain, was developed by one of the Capodimonte kiln workers and, in pieces from the early period, recalls Capodimontes glossy white material. Even Capodimontes stylistic influence is occasionally evident, as it is in this figure. With his emphatic posture and jutting bearded jaw, this Pantaloon is distinctly reminiscent of a

Vietnams millennium of foreign occupation ended in 939 when the great Vietnamese general Ngo Quyen drove out the Chinese and proclaimed himself King Ngo Vuong. In a move clearly designed to emphasise the restoration of national independence, he transferred the capital from the fortress at Dai La back to Co Loa, capital of the first free Viet Kingdom of Au Lac. Ngô Quyền (吳權; March 12, 897 - 944) (r. 939-944) was a Vietnamese prefect and general during the Southern Han Dynasty occupation of Giao Chu in the Red River Valley in what is now northern Vietnam. In 938, he soundly defeated the Chinese at the famous Battle of Bạch Đằng River north of modern Haiphong and ended 1,000 years of Chinese domination dating back to 111 BC under the Han Dynasty.

In the seventeenth century, Iranian patrons began commissioning large-scale paintings as decoration for palatial interiors. While the use of oil paint on stretched canvases was probably derived from European tradition, the Iranians did not frame the paintings to hang individually on the walls like their European counterparts. Instead the paintings were part of an overall architectural design, fitting neatly into recessed spaces on the walls. The subject of this portrait, Prince Yahya, was a son of the second ruler of the Qajar dynasty, Fath Ali Shah (reigned 1797-1834). His father appointed him at an early age to govern the province of Gilan, near the Caspian Sea.
