Colossal statues of yakshas, male divinities who personify the productive forces of nature, were especially popular in the northern Indian region around the ancient city of Mathura. They were installed in shrines in parks and gardens, often associated with extraordinary trees. The red sandstone is from a nearby quarry, called Sikri.

Monumental Head of a Foreigner ca. 1295-1070 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside With its short projecting beard, this monumental head portrays the image of an Asiatic man as one of Egypts prototypical enemies. Part of a series of such heads, it most probably decorated a window in a palace façade, through which the king would appear overlooking a courtyard. Seeming as if lying below him, these heads would appear as if fallen under the Pharaohs dominion. Date: late 5th-4th century B.C..The youth wearing a pilos (pointed helmet) is a common type among Tarentine terracottas. In earlier scholarship, these figures were identified as the Dioskouroi, Kastor and Polydeukes, who with their sisters Helen and Klytamnestra, were offspring of Leda. Memorial head 18th century Akan peoples This elegant terracotta head is a memorial portrait (nsodie) of an Akan ruler from present-day southern Ghana. It is an idealized representation whose serene expression and well-balanced features suggest the positive qualities such rulers are expected to embody. Created posthumously, royal images like this one were placed with the portraits of previous rulers in sacred areas within the cemetery called asensie. Generally, each royal figure was accompanied by sculptures of courtiers and servants, perhaps to provide aid and comfort to the deceased in the afterlife. Together, they formed sculptural assemblages that honored and preserved the memory of these respected individuals and the chiefly lineages of which they were part. Funerary Mask ca. 50 B.C.-50 A.D. Ptolemaic or Roman Period This fragment has the characteristics of coffins created in Akhmim in the second half of the first century BC and the early part of the first century AD. It is created from mud and straw, and like female coffins in that group shows the deceased wearing a great large floral crown bound with a ribbon, a straight Egyptian wig, and on the shoulder a vertically striped/pleated garment.On the basis of inscriptions on some Akhmim coffins, the female coffins such as the museum's appear to be representations of the deceased as Hathor.
