Twin boys 18th century China The four bodies and two heads of this sculpture belong to four entwined boysone pair seated and the other kneeling on all fours. The group represents the principle of ancient Chinese cosmology known as liangyi sheng sixiang, in which two primary forces (yin and yang) generate four images. Sculpture in the shape of two figures (suplicante). Culture: Alamito. Dimensions: 12 × 7 × 4 in. (30.5 × 17.8 × 10.2 cm). Date: 500 B.C.-A.D. 500.This sculpture, of a type often referred to as a supplicant (suplicante) for the position of the figure with raised hands, represents two figures, back to back, one smaller than the other, the larger one marked as male. The back-to-back curvilinear bodies of the figures were punctuated by drilled openings to demarcate the limbs. The faces are tilted slightly upward, with a rounded, crescent-shaped face and prominent nose. The eyes were sculpted as bulging circular shapes.The Condorhuasi-Alamito peoples were llama pastoralists in the area that is now the Catamarca province of Argentina. They were skilled artisans in a variety of media, including ceramic, metal, and stone. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Condorhuasi-Alamito peoples maintained extensive long-distance contacts with other regions, including the important site of Tiwana

Behold the Child. Artist: Medardo Rosso (Italian, Turin 1858-1928 Milan). Dimensions: 17 x 14 x 10 in. (43.2 x 35.6 x 25.4 cm). Date: 1906.In his lifetime, the Italian sculptor Medardo Rosso was rivaled by Auguste Rodin, whom he is said to have influenced, and revered by Umberto Boccioni, whose Futurist notions of simultaneity and motion he disavowed. Although Rosso's reputation never matched these artists', he remained in the forefront of modern sculpture from the 1880s to the early 1900s. His last sculpture, Ecce Puer (Behold the Child), was produced in 1906 in London, where that year the artist had a one-man show. It is a commissioned portrait of Alfred William Mond, a British boy of about five or six years old. Rosso's style has been called Impressionist because light and air dematerialize form. Uraeus for freize Late Period-Ptolemaic Period 664-30 B.C. When a cobra is threatened, it raises its upper body and inflates its hood. In ancient Egypt the rearing cobra (also called an uraeus) was seen as protection and was also associated with a number of goddesses. Deities or royals often wear an uraeus on their foreheads as protection and to indicate their divine or royal status. A frieze of rearing cobras was often used as a protective and decorative element for furniture or architecture. The piece here and one like it (17.192.46) were possibly part of such a frieze.
