A photograph taken of Philae, an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam, Egypt. Philae was initially located near the expansive First Cataract of the Nile in Upper Egypt and was the site of an Egyptian temple complex. The temple complex was dismantled and moved to nearby Agilkia Island as part of the UNESCO Nubia Campaign project, protecting this and other compounds before the 1970 completion of the Aswan High Dam. The most ancient was a temple for Isis, built in the reign of Nectanebo I during 380-362 BC, the other ruins date from the Ptolemaic Kingdom (282-145 BC), with many traces of Roman work in Philae dedicated to Ammon-Osiris.

Court Ladies at a Ceremony ca. 1353-1336 B.C. New Kingdom, Amarna Period This group of figures gazes upward at a much larger figure, presumably the king. They hold something to their mouths, perhaps some kind of food. The variability of their poses and adornment suggests a diverse crowd and a festive mood. Detail from the Black Obelisk, of Shalmaneser III. A black limestone Assyrian sculpture with scenes in bas-relief and inscriptions. It comes from Nimrud (ancient Kalhu), in northern Iraq, and commemorates the deeds of King Shalmaneser III (reigned 858-824 BC).

Carvings depict prisoners captured in battle by Ramses II at Abu Simbel. The entire site was moved 200m in the 1960s in order to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.

Reliefs from the Tomb of Nespekashuty 656-610 B.C. Late Period, Saite The vizier Nes-peka-shuty took over the terrace of an old Middle Kingdom tomb cut into the north cliff at Deir el-Bahri near the Dynasty 11 temple of Mentuhotep II and the Dynasty 18 temple of Hatshepsut. Work on his tomb was never finished, and many of the extant reliefs show varying degrees of completion, ranging from preliminary drawings in red paint to finely carved reliefs. Several of these intermediate stages are preserved in this relief fragment depicting an episode from Nes-peka-shuty's funeral, in which the barge bearing his coffin and the officiating mortuary priest clad in leopard skin is towed across the river to the necropolis on the west bank.During this late period of Egyptian art there was a tendency to draw on earlier styles and iconography. The decoration of Assyrian Palaces. Assyrian Kings competed to make each new palace finer than the last. Carved reliefs decorated the interior walls, while colossal man-headed lions or bulls stood as guardians of gateways.

Relief fragment with king Khufu's cattle ca. 2551-2528 B.C. Old Kingdom These cattle with long, lyre-shaped horns are probably offerings for the funerary cult of Khufu. Such cattle were kept in herds that grazed in open grasslands in the Nile Delta or at the desert margin. The inscriptions over their backs mention the pharaoh's name but are otherwise difficult to translate; they seem to refer to outlying or foreign lands. The austere but very sensitive style of relief carving and the gently rounded outlines, which let the figures blend beautifully with the background, are typical of Khufu's reign.. Darius I (550 - 486 BCE), also known as Darius the Great, was the fourth king of kings of the Achaemenid Empire. Darius held the empire at its peak, then including Egypt, Balochistan, Kurdistan and parts of Greece. The decay and eventual downfall of the empire commenced with his death and the ascension of his son, Xerxes I. This is a relief of the Persian King Darius I seated on a cushioned throne and holding a staff and flower, two traditional symbols of royal power in Persia. The subject approaching Darius to offer tribute stands behind two incense burners, which were intended to keep visitors a respectful distance from the king.

A photograph taken of the Abu Simbel Temple, in Nubia, Southern Egypt, near the border with Sudan. The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple dates to the 13th century BC, during the 19th dynasty reign of the Pharaoh Ramesses II. It is a monument to the king and commemorates his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. The complex was relocated in its entirety in 1968 under the supervision of a Polish archaeologist, Kazimierz Michalowski, on an artificial hill made from a domed structure, high above the Aswan High Dam reservoir.

King Ashurnasirpal 11 and genius 9th century BC Kalchu (Nimrud, northern Iraq) alabaster

This marble slab was uncovered during excavations of the Southwest Palace at the ancient city of Nineveh, on the eastern bank of the Tigris River. The figures show an Assyrian assault between 700 to 692 B.C. on the city of Alammu (thought to be present-day Jerusalem) by the Assyrians under Sennacherib. Note that the besieging archers are protected by wicker screens. This slab is now housed in the British Museum
