Date: ca. 1194-1188 B.C..The tomb of Siptah (KV 47) was discovered by Theodore M. Davis 1905, and excavation was continued in 1912. During the two seasons, Davis found hundreds of fragments of Egyptian alabaster. Many of these belonged to between 40 and 50 shabtis inscribed with the names of Siptah. Some were sections of funerary vessels. The rest belonged to at least three sarcophagi and two canopic chests, one belonging to Siptah, the other to a Queen Tiye, who has not yet been identified with certainty. Pair Statue of Nebwaw and His Wife, Tenethet ca. 1390-1295 B.C. New Kingdom The statue depicts a man and his wife, each with an arm around the other's back. The faces, hair styles and garments suggest that the statue was curved in the second half of Dynasty 18, probably in the riign of Amenhotep III. On either side of the seat, offering texts are dedicated to a man named Nebwaw and his wifeTenethet by their son, Userhat, who was a scribe and treasurer of the god Amun. Other texts written down the center of each figure's skirt have been erased, suggesting that the statue was originally dedicated to another couple.This statue is currently on long-term loan to the Museo de las Culturas in Mexico City.. Bust of a Naophorous Statue ca. 1301-1200 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside When complete, this kneeling statue of an elite man held a shrine, whose upper edge can still be seen across the chest. The mans broad face, pleated-sleeved garment, and hairstyle—showing echeloned side panels and partially covered ears—date this statue to the Ramesside Period.? Naophoroi—statues that show their patron presenting the image of a deity within a naos (Greek for ‘shrine) -like this one were found in tomb and mainly temple contexts. First appearing in the Eighteenth Dynasty, they are understood to express their owners devotion as well as mutually beneficial protection between the dedicant and the deity. Head of a female or goddess wearing a necklace ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian This female head was found in a well in the Northwest Palace of Ashurnasirpal, and its warm color is a result of long exposure to the well water or sludge. It is one of the two largest ivory heads known from the ancient Near East. The other, from the same well, is now in the Iraq Museum in Baghdad. The ivory heads were thrown in the well when the palace was sacked, perhaps during the final defeat of Assyria at the end of the seventh century B.C. Originally, they may have been part of statues made from various materials, including gold, wood, and textiles, which are recorded in texts but have not survived intact. Two mortises (square-ended recesses) were cut into the flat rear surface of the ivory for the attachment of separate elements above and below. Kneeling Female Figure 15th-early 16th century Aztec Aztec sculptors used specific formal and aesthetic conventions to depict the human figure. Seated female figures are usually shown with their legs tucked under them, their feet turned inward so that in the back their toes are touching. Their hands rest on their knees. This sculpture depicts an elegant Aztec lady wearing a short, simple skirt fastened around the waist with a knotted belt worked in low relief. She wears no upper garment. Circular ornaments bedeck her ears. Her hair is wound about her head in two strands and held at the top. Her face has delicate rounded contours and is gently animated. The eyes and mouth are shown as recessed ovals which once contained inlays. Sculptures of females without any deity attributes are rare in Aztec art. Colossal Statue of Amenhotep III, reworked, reinscribed by Merneptah ca. 1390-1353 B.C. New Kingdom This colossus of Amenhotep III, whose distinctive facial features are still recognizable despite their damaged state, once adorned the temple he built to Amen-Re in Luxor (ancient Thebes). Like so many Dynasty 18 monuments, this statue, along with its partner (22.5.2), was usurped a century and a half later by Merneptah, who had it moved from its original location to the eastern portal of the temple. Merneptah's deeply incised titulary contrasts with the restrained carving of the sema tawy ("Unification of the Two Lands") motif on both sides of the throne of this, the larger of the colossi. While the broad, flat planes and bold proportions are typical of Egyptian architectural statuary, these two pieces are distinguished by the quality of their sculptural details, such as the rendering of the faces and the elements of the costumes.. Old Assyrian Trading Colony This figure belongs to a group of carved ivories, mostly furniture elements, probably found at the site of a palace at Acemhöyük in central Anatolia. Most of the ivories depict imagery borrowed and transformed from Egyptian sources, such as the hybrid creature shown here who combines human and lion features. In Egypt, representations of lioness goddesses appeared as early as the Old Kingdom. This creature, with its kneeling posture and closed mouth, indicated by a diagonal groove, does not appear menacing. Its identity is mysterious, but it appears to have symbolized a benevolent force. Such imagery also demonstrates the contacts that Acemhöyük maintained with the eastern Mediterranean world in addition to the better documented trade with Assur in northern Mesopotamia.The plaque has attachment holes at top and bottom, and probably was used to decorate a piece of furniture. Yuny, who lived in the city of Asyut, was a chief royal scribe and holder of many other offices, perhaps including that of physician. On the center fold of Yuny's pleated skirt is an inscription that reads: "May everything that comes forth upon the offering table of the god . and all pure food that comes forth from the Great Enclosure the temple complex at Heliopolis be for the chief scribe, royal scribe of letters, Yuny, justified."Renenutet affectionately places her right arm around her husband's shoulders. He left few monuments except his tomb and unfinished mortuary temple.This alabaster shabti of the king was found in his tomb by the American excavator Theodore Davis. Shabti figures were placed in burials. They were usually inscribed with spells that allowed them to substitute for the deceased in performing manual labor in the afterlife. Date: 1200-1500.Between the third century B.C. and second century A.D., the people in the west Mexican state of Colima buried their honored dead with sculptural ceramic vessels in the form of human and animal figures. In the same region in later centuries, ceremonial vessels were given simpler form with a strong emphasis on polychrome surface decoration. This pair of male and female figure vessels, said to have come from the site of El Chanal in Colima, combines the early with the later tradition. Both vessels have large flared openings in back of their necks. From humplike protuberances on their backs project long-tapering spouts. The surfaces are covered with red slip and embellished with detailed red-on-cream designs.
