Large Kneeling Statue of Hatshepsut ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom This over life-size kneeling statue and two others in the collection (30.3.1 and 29.3.1) were made to flank the processional pathway along the axis of Hatshepsut's temple at Deir el-Bahri. They depict Hatshepsut as the ideal Egyptian king - a young man in the prime of life. Each statue has an inscription that includes her personal name, Hatshepsut (literally foremost of noblewomen) and/or a feminine pronoun or verb form, so the masculine garb and physique were not intended to trick people into thinking that she was a man. Although traditionally the Egyptian throne passed from father to son, when the necessity arose, a female ruler was accepted. However, the trappings and symbolism associated with kingship were overwhelmingly masculine and the sculptors of this statue were following a tradition that extended back more than fifteen hundred years. Upper part of a statue of Thutmose III ca. 1479-1425 B.C. New Kingdom This fine indurated limestone torso and head was uncovered in the early Twentieth Century during excavations conducted by Edouard Naville at the mortuary temple of Mentuhotep II at Deir el-Bahri. The face, which had brocken off in antiquity, was discovered in the 1960s by Polish excavators who were clearing the destroyed temple of Thutmose III which is adjacent to Mentuhotep's temple. This piece is now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. In the 1990s, the Egyptian Museum made a cast of the face, which is now displayed on the Metropolitan torso. At the same time, a cast of the torso was sent to Cairo and is now displayed with the face. Artist Donald Jensen painted the two casts to match the originals.. Statue of the Goddess Sakhmet. Dimensions: h. 210 cm (82 11/16 in); w. of base 47.5 cm (18 11/16 in); d. 95.5 cm (37 5/8 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 18. Reign: reign of Amenhotep III. Date: ca. 1390-1352 B.C..The goddess Sakhmet, whose lioness head with its small intense eyes and prominent sinewy jaws bespeaks her potential for violence, elicited great efforts of appeasement. This is one of some six hundred statues of the goddess created during the reign of Amenhotep III that either still stand in, or can be traced to, two main locales: the mortuary complex of the king at Kom el Heitan on the Theban west bank, and the Mut Temple Complex at Karnak on the east bank at Thebes. This statue was most likely found at the latter site. It was long thought that the king himself had erected statues in both places, but today many scholars believe that originally the statues all stood at the Kom el Heitan mortuary temple. Canopic jar lid ca. 1878-1840 B.C. Middle Kingdom This sculpted head was the lid of a canopic jar, one of the four containers for the organs that were removed during mummification. In previous periods, canopic jars had simple disc-shaped or hemispherical lids. In the late First Intermediate Period to early Middle Kingdom, however, lids in the form of human heads were introduced.The hooded eyes, marked cheek bones, and the lines beside the nostrils of this head can be compared to the features found in the quartzite face of Senwosret III (26.7.1394).. Nefertiti (c. 1370 BC - c. 1330 BCE) was the Great Royal Wife of the Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten . Nefertiti and Akhenaten were known for a religious revolution, in which they started to worship one god only. This was the Sun God Aten. She is also famous for her bust, now in Berlin's Neues Museum. Some scholars believe that Nefertiti ruled briefly after her husband's death and before the accession of Tutankhamun as Smenkhkare, although this identification is a matter of ongoing debate.

Nikare as a scribe ca. 2420-2389 B.C. or later Old Kingdom Old Kingdom Egyptians sought to express a person's intangible personality by a multiplicity of images. Nikare was represented by at least four statues, including two in the Museum's collection (see also 52.19). In this statue he slightly bends his head he sits with over a papyrus, which he unrolls on his lap. The text records his name and title: Employee of the Granary, Nikare.. Falcon-form case containing a corn mummy 332-30 B.C. Ptolemaic Period This falcon-headed coffin does not contain an actual mummy but a symbolic Osiris mummy stuffed with grain and sand. The falcon head on the coffin and the hieroglyphic text on the painted lid indicate it is associated with the funerary deity Ptah-Sokar-Osiris.Such coffins and 'mummies' were prepared and buried in annual rites at certain centers as part of the mysteries of Osiris. Subsequent germination of the grain would symbolize the possibility of new life offered by Osiris. This particular example is of a type associated with the site of Tuna el-Gebel.. Plaque Depicting a Goddess or Queen, and on Opposite Side a King 400-200 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Small Late Period and Ptolemaic reliefs or sculptures that depict a subject in a partial or unfinished way but are themselves finished objects constitute a special class of object. Guidelines like those for artists are often prominently exhibited as part of the object, although, in fact, many instances can be noted where the object simply could not serve as a suitable model for a traditional formal Egyptian representation. Personifications of kingship, figures that may represent the now emerging demigods Imhotep and Amenhotep Son of Hapu, and popular gods like Harpokrates or Isis are heavily represented within the corpus. Taken together, the figures represented and the other features indicate the reliefs and sculptures of this class, sometimes called by Egyptologists "sculptors models / votives," were the material of a donation practice, perhaps connected with the prolific temple

She held many titles such as: king's beloved wife and priestess of Hathor. Middle Kingdom; XI dynasty; Deir Bahari, Temple of Nebhepetre Mentuhotep II (reigned c. 2061 BC 2010 BC) was a Pharaoh of the 11th Dynasty who reigned for 51 years. Around his 39th year on the throne he reunited Egypt, thus ending the First Intermediate Period. Consequently, he is considered the first pharaoh of the Middle Kingdom.

Head of Amenhotep II ca. 1427-1400 B.C. New Kingdom Amenhotep II, sixth king of Dynasty 18, was the son and coregent of Thutmose III. He was buried in Tomb 35 of the Valley of the Kings at Thebes, where his mummy was found still resting in its original sarcophagus. His principal activities as king were to preserve the hegemony over most of Nubia and the Levant that the military campaigns of Thutmose III had established.This finely sculpted head of the king shows him wearing a nemes headcloth with a prominent uraeus on the front. The body of the snake undulates up and over the top of the nemes. The fine features of the face show a youthful king. Amenhotep became king before he was twenty and he noted his accomplishments as a hunter, charioteer, and archer on several of his monuments.. Head of Amenhotep II 545891

bust of Nefertiti from the Agyptisches Museum Berlin collection, presently in the Neues Museum. Neferneferuaten Nefertiti (c. 1370 - c. 1330 BC), Egyptian queen and the Great Royal Wife (chief consort) of Akhenaten. The Nefertiti Bust is a painted stucco-coated limestone bust, believed to have been crafted in 1345 B.C. by the sculptor Thutmose. A German archaeological team led by Ludwig Borchardt discovered the bust in 1912 in Thutmose's workshop.

Gudea was prince of the independent kingdom of Lagash in southern Mesopotamia, in the late 3rd millennium. He was known for his piety and for the many temples he built. This statuette is the only complete extant statues of a series of diorite representations of Gudea. The inscription engraved on his robe indicates that it is dedicated to the god Ningishzida. This statue was found during the excavations at Tello (ancient Girsu), capital of the kingdom of Lagash (in present-day Iraq).

Shabti of Neferibresaneith, son of Shepenbastet 570-526 BC Late Period Neferibresaneith's 336 shabtis were dispersed at the time his burial was discovered in 1928-29 by Cecil Firth for the Antiquities Organization. This shabti, purchased on the art market, surely belongs to this group. The statuettes mention no titles, but his mother's name is given: Shepenbastet. Inscriptions in his tomb mention that his father was Merib and give Neferibreneith's titles, including chancellor, royal wab priest, king's valet, and director of the palace.His name is formed on the prenomen Neferibre of Psamtik II, but the position of the burial points to a burial date in late Dynasty 26. His tomb was situated in the Userkaf pyramid complex at Saqqara. There he had been buried in a double tomb with Wahibremen (whose name is formed on the prenomen of Apries). Mexico, Sculpture depicting Goddess of Thirteen Snakes

Funerary Figure of Qebehsenuef ca. 400-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period This falcon-headed figure represents the god Qebehsenuef, who protected the intestines. He is one of the four so-called sons of Horus that are often depicted as mummies, each with a different head (for the other three statuettes belonging to the same set, see 12.182.37a-b, d). The sons of Horus were deities who protected the internal organs and are probably best known from their representations on the lids of the canopic jars that contained mummified viscera. They were also thought to assist in the process of mummification and to provide nourishment, possibly because they were associated with the internal organs. This Hyksos sphinx dates to Egypt's 12th Dynasty (c. 1991-1786 B.C.) and was found in Tanis. The noted French archaeologist Auguste Mariette wrote in 1863 that these black granite sphinxes 'differ from other Egyptian monuments in a very marked way as one sees by comparing them with the Sphinx of Tutmes III and Ramses II. The face is round, the eyes are small, the nose flattened, the cheek bones projecting, the lower lip sliphtly advanced, the ears are those of a bull wehile the mane of a lion encircles the visage.' The Hyksos were a people from the Middle East who took over the eastern Nile delta, ruling Egypt there from c. 1800 to 1550. Tanis is a city in the northeastern Nile Delta.
