Statue of Ramesses II (discovered at Mit Rahina), is a 3,200-year-old figure of Ramesses II, King of Egypt

Osiris figure for Gautsoshen. Dimensions: H. 46.5 cm. Dynasty: Dynasty 21. Date: ca. 1000-945 B.C..This Osiride figure was carved from sycomore-fig wood, then inserted into a coniferous wood base. A cylindrical chamber was created by sawing horizontally across the middle of the back, and then vertically from the feet to the cross-cut, with each part then hollowed out. The facial features are relatively well carved, and special attention was given to the god's crown--the two side feathers (representing ostrich plumes) were made of separate pieces of wood, and the uraeus (rearing cobra on the brow) was is crowned with a horned sun disk, more usually associated with Isis or Hathor. Gautsoshen's Book of the Dead was put into the interior chamber through a hole in the base, which was plugged up afterwards. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Standing male worshiper ca. 2900-2600 B.C. Sumerian In Mesopotamia gods were thought to be physically present in the materials and experiences of daily life. Enlil, considered the most powerful Mesopotamian god during most of the third millennium B.C., was a "raging storm" or "wild bull," while the goddess Inanna reappeared in different guises as the morning and evening star. Deities literally inhabited their cult statues after they had been animated by the proper rituals, and fragments of worn statues were preserved within the walls of the temple.This standing figure, with clasped hands and a wide-eyed gaze, is a worshiper. It was placed in the "Square Temple" at Tell Asmar, perhaps dedicated to the god Abu, in order to pray perpetually on behalf of the person it represented. Egyptian God probably 1780s Clodion (Claude Michel) The terracotta statuette reached its zenith as a standalone work of art in the second half of the eighteenth century at the hand of the superbly gifted French sculptor, Clodion. This delightful pair of undated terracottas exemplifies Clodion's interest in the art of ancient Egypt, which began early in his career, when he lived in Rome between 1762 and 1771. The male figure was modeled after two well-known ancient prototypes -the head of Antinoiis Osiris (Vatican), and the enthroned figure of Ramses II (Louvre) -while the female figure fuses classical references in a similar fashion through her Grecian costume and Egyptian-inspired hairstyle and pose. In their rigid poses, Clodion' s Egyptian figures lack the buoyant movement and subtle sensuality typical of his beloved bacchante subjects. Date: ca. 18th century B.C..Around 1900 B.C., traders from the northern Mesopotamian city of Ashur established karums, or "merchants' colonies," at a number of central Anatolian cities, among them the site of Acemhöyük. Assyrian merchants lived in a restricted area of these cities, trading textiles and tin from the southeast for silver but operating under the rule of local kings. Acemhöyük is a large mound located south of Ankara near the Turkish town of Aksaray on the Konya Plain. It lay on a route linking Anatolia and the East and seems to have been an important center for the copper trade and industry. Pair Statue of Nebwaw and His Wife, Tenethet. Dimensions: H. 71.5 cm (28 1/8 in). Dynasty: late Dynasty 18. Reign: reign of Amenhotep III or later. Date: ca. 1390-1295 B.C..The statue depicts a man and his wife, each with an arm around the other's back. The faces, hair styles and garments suggest that the statue was curved in the second half of Dynasty 18, probably in the riign of Amenhotep III. On either side of the seat, offering texts are dedicated to a man named Nebwaw and his wifeTenethet by their son, Userhat, who was a scribe and treasurer of the god Amun. Other texts written down the center of each figure's skirt have been erased, suggesting that the statue was originally dedicated to another couple.This statue is currently on long-term loan to the Museo de las Culturas in Mexico City. Head of a Female Figure from the Tomb of Khety ca. 2051-2000 B.C. Middle Kingdom Herbert E. Winlock, the Museum's field director at Thebes, identified this head as an image of the treasurer Khety in whose tomb it was found. Comparisons to complete figures with similar close-fitting, short hair determined, however, that this head belonged to a female figure. The woman was most probably nude, and the absence of a wig and garment made her a representative of femininity in general. Her presence among Khety's burial equipment provided him not with a concubine (another out-dated interpretation), but with the means to be reborn after death. The figure's head is a masterpiece of wood carving. Rounded cheeks, "love rings" on the neck, a dimpled chin, a smiling mouth, and the minutely modeled tiny curls of her hair combine to form an image of irresistible charm. The eyes must have been inlaid, and the eyebrows are still filled with dark paste; there are remains of black paint on the hair.. Head

Head of a Sphinx ca. 1981-1878 B.C. Middle Kingdom The uraeus serpent marks the royal status of this person, who is wearing an unusual wig with striations running from the forehead to the back. The statue depicts part of the real hair projecting from underneath the wig, in front of the ear. Looking at the head itself, it seems unclear if a man or woman is depicted. The shape of the mouth and the several tight curls of the uraeus fit well to early dynasty 12, but the naturally sculpted eyebrow and ear point towards the middle of this dynasty. The facial features do not match any king of this period, which makes it more likely that the head depicts a queen or princess. Shabti of Siptah ca. 1237-1200 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside This shabti belongs to Siptah, the penultimate ruler of the Nineteenth Dynasty. Shabtis were placed in a tomb so the owner's spirit would not have to perform manual labor in the afterlife. The figurines were often inscribed with the "shabti text" - chapter 6 of the Book of the Dead - a spell that exhorts the shabti to substitute itself if the owner is asked to till the fields, irrigate the land, or transport sand from east to west. To this end, even royal shabtis are often depicted clutching a pick and a hoe, and with a basket hanging over one or both shoulders. Theodore M. Davis, who discovered the tomb of Siptah (KV 47) in 1905, found there hundreds of fragments of Egyptian alabaster. Many of these belonged to between 40 and 50 shabtis inscribed with the names of Siptah. Some were sections of funerary vessels. The rest belonged to at least three sarcophagi and two canopic chests, one belonging to Siptah, the other to a Queen

Furniture plaque: female sphinx with Hathor-style curls ca. 18th century B.C. Old Assyrian Trading Colony This figure belongs to a group of carved ivories, mostly furniture elements, probably found at the site of a palace at Acemhöyük in central Anatolia. Most of the ivories depict imagery borrowed and transformed from Egyptian sources, such as the sphinx represented by this plaque, a fantastic creature that combines a human head with a lions body, with or without wings. Although the bottom of the plaque is broken away, parts of the creatures leonine hind leg and tail are still preserved. The sphinx has a hairstyle of long, curled locks similar to that worn by the Egyptian goddess Hathor. She wears a fillet across the forehead, above which three additional short curls rise. One lock is tucked behind a large ear. The eye, hollowed out to receive an inlay (now missing), and nose are prominent, and the mouth and chin are small.
