Statue of Seti I ca. 1294-1279 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside Seti I, second king of Dynasty 19, was, like his father Ramesses I, very conscious of his role in establishing a new dynasty and restoring the power and stature of Egypt among its neighbors. He campaigned in the Levant and his battle reliefs decorate the exterior walls of the huge hypostyle hall that he added to the temple of Karnak. He also reopened the gold mines in the eastern desert and Nubia. He built a beautiful mortuary temple for himself at Abydos in which was carved the famous kinglist of Abydos, as well as a mortuary temple at Thebes. In the Valley of the Kings, he built one of the most beautifully carved and decorated tombs ever made there.This kneeling statue of the king shows him making offerings to Osiris and was probably intended for his temple at Abydos. The same high artistic standards that are seen in the reliefs of Seti I are evident in this statue and the face seems to be reminiscent of earlier kings of Dyna

Seated Statue of the Nomarch Idu II of Dendera ca. 2246-2152 B.C. Old Kingdom Discovered in his mastaba tomb at Dendera, this statue represents the nomarch (governor) of a province of Upper Egypt during the late Old Kingdom. This man, Idu II, wielded considerable power during the long reign of Pepi II, the last king of Dynasty 6. Created by a provincial artist, the figure has very large eyes and somewhat unconventional proportions, and is seated on a high-backed chair instead of the more common block seat. He wears a shoulder-length curled wig and a short kilt adorned by a beaded apron, indicated by a triangle on the front of the skirt. Traces of the original color black for the wig and chair, red for the skin, and white for the kilt, are still visible.Since only fragments of the statues buried in the tomb of Perneb have been preserved (see 14.7.105-.107), this statue of Idu II is displayed in Perneb's serdab (statue chamber).Link to the Artist ProjectSarah Sze on the Tomb of Perneb.

Majapahit was a vast island-based empire centred on the island of Java (modern-day Indonesia) from 1293 to around 1500. Majapahit reached its peak of glory during the era of Hayam Wuruk, whose reign from 1350 to 1389 marked by conquest which extended through Southeast Asia. His achievement is also credited to his prime minister, Gajah Mada. According to the Nagarakretagama (Desawarñana) written in 1365, Majapahit was an empire of 98 tributaries, stretching from Sumatra to New Guinea; consisting of present day Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, southern Thailand, Sulu Archipelago, Manila, and East Timor, although the true nature of the Majapahit sphere of influence is still the subject of study among historians. Majapahit was one of the last major empires of the region and is considered to be one of the greatest and most powerful empires in the history of Indonesia and Southeast Asia, one that is sometimes seen as the precedent for Indonesia's modern boundaries.

Old Assyrian Trading Colony Around 1900 B.C., traders from the northern Mesopotamian city of Ashur established karums, or "merchants' colonies," at a number of central Anatolian cities, among them the site of Acemhöyük. Assyrian merchants lived in a restricted area of these cities, trading textiles and tin from the southeast for silver but operating under the rule of local kings. Acemhöyük is a large mound located south of Ankara near the Turkish town of Aksaray on the Konya Plain. It lay on a route linking Anatolia and the East and seems to have been an important center for the copper trade and industry. This head of the great state god of the New Kingdom, Amun (or Amun-Re), recognizable by his tall cap and double plumes, has a cool, somewhat uncompromising mien. The break at the right side indicates that the head belonged to a group statue, which may have included the king, most likely Tutankhamun.A scholar has noted the head has strong stylistic and size similarities to a head of a king, probably Tutankhamun, in Bristol, and to a head of Mut that has appeared on the art market, suggesting they might have been the pieces that formed a group triad with this head. Head of a King, possibly Amememhat IV ca. 1814-1805 B.C. suggested Middle Kingdom This small royal head is not easy to place in the history of Middle Kingdom art. The face is certainly reminiscent of images created late in the reign of Amenemhat III, but such resemblances are seen in many royal portraits created throughout late Dynasty 12 and Dynasty 13. There is one approach, however, that might lead to a tentative attribution of the head. Part of the lintel of a limestone shrine was found among the debris west of the pyramid of Amenemhat I (22.1.12), exhibited in gallery 109). It is inscribed with the name of Amenemhat IV. If there indeed existed a shrine for a statue of that king at the site, this head might once have been part of it. Except for small human faces on a row of uraei cobras, there is no other statue preserved showing the features of this son and successor of Amenemhat III.. Date: ca. 1859-1750 B.C..The large ears and hooded eyes of this exceptinally sensitive image are seen in many later Middle Kingdom representations, continuing the artistic tradition of Twelfth Dynasty royal portraits. Ashurnasipal II succeeded his father, Tukulti-Ninurta II, in 883 BC. During his reign he embarked on a vast program of expansion, first conquering the peoples to the north in Asia Minor as far as Nairi and exacting tribute from Phrygia, then invading Aram (modern Syria) conquering the Aramaeans and neo Hittites between the Khabur and the Euphrates Rivers. His harshness prompted a revolt that he crushed decisively in a pitched, two-day battle. According to his monument inscription while recalling this massacre he says 'their men young and old I took prisoners. Of some I cut off their feet and hands; of others I cut off the ears, noses and lips; of the young men's ears I made a heap; of the old men's heads I made a marinet. I exposed their heads as a trophy in front of their city. The male children and the female children I burned in flames; the city I destroyed, and consumed with fire'. Following this victory, he advanced without opposition as far as the Mediterranean and exacted tribut

Date: ca. 1580-1550 B.C..This image of a queen wearing the vulture headdress over a voluminous tripartite wig was split off its backslab in antiquity, most probably by somebody who wanted to make use of this conveniently shaped piece of stone for other purposes. It is conceivable that a king (her father, son, or husband) was originally represented seated beside her. The sculpture has been identified tentatively as Queen Ahmes Nefertari, mother of Amenhotep I, and dated to the reign of Ahmose (ca. 1550-1525 B.C.) at the very beginning of the Eighteenth Dynasty. However, the remarkable flatness of the face and wig is familiar from certain works created during the Seventeenth Dynasty (compare the seated statueof Siamun in gallery 11), and the intriguing interplay of fleshy musculature in the lower part of the face is even reminis

Funerary Figure of Akhenaten ca. 1353-1336 B.C. New Kingdom, Amarna Period Shabtis are small funerary figures intended to perform work that the deceased was called upon to do in the afterlife. To serve this purpose, the figures were inscribed with the shabti spell, chapter six of the Book of the Dead. More than two hundred fragmentary funerary figures inscribed for Akhenaten are known, and their existence suggests that belief in the afterlife and certain aspects of traditional funerary practices survived during the Amarna period. However, Akhenaten's figures are inscribed only with the king's names and titles (see also 66.99.106), not with the standard shabti spell (as seen on 30.8.57).This figure shows Akhenaten clutching two ankh hieroglyphs rather than the hoe and pick that are more traditional attributes of shabtis (see 26.7.919). Upper part of a statue of Iqer ca. 2000-1917 B.C. Middle Kingdom This torso and head were discovered separately in the debris of a large tomb at Deir el-Bahri on the west bank at Thebes: the torso was on the floor level of a large courtyard; and the head, along with part of the statue's pedestal, was found in the fill of the burial shaft. On the fragmentary base were the remains of an inscription that included the owner's name, Iqer.Stylistically the statue, which follows the traditions of the late Old Kingdom, can be dated to the late 11th or early 12th Dynasty. The lack of a back pillar suggests that this bust was part of a seated statue. Here Iqer crosses his arms over his chest with his hands open and flat, in a gesture likely directed toward the afterlife judges to whom he would have to justify his deeds in life.. Figure: Head 16th century Sapi peoples Little is known of the original use and significance of this tradition of steatite sculpture, created in southeastern Sierra Leone and western Guinea in the sixteenth century. The massive head, bulging eyes, broad nose with flaring nostrils, full lips, and jaw relate stylistically to works in carved ivory from the same period created by local artisans for European patrons. Attributes of this figure, such as the elaborate coiffure, scarifications, and filed teeth, suggest that it represents an individual of rank and distinction. Such works in durable materials are important documents that provide a glimpse into indigenous cultural practices of earlier periods. In the relatively recent past, these sculptures have been unearthed by local farmers of Kissi and Mende heritage who have assimilated them into new contexts as part of their own ritual life.. Cambodia: A 12th century Angkorian statue showing Mucalinda, the King of Serpents (naga), protecting the Buddha. Originally from Puor near Siem Reap, now in the National Museum of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. The National Museum, housed in a red pavilion built in 1918, holds a collection of Khmer art including some of the finest pieces in existence. Exhibits include a 6th century statue of Vishnu, a 9th century statue of Shiva, and the famous sculpted head of Jayavarman VII in meditative pose. Particularly impressive is a damaged bust of a reclining Vishnu which was once part of a massive bronze statue found at the Western Mebon Temple in Angkor.

The form puts a strong emphasis on the face and complements the often stern countenances favored at the time.The front of the statue gives the names, titles and parentage of Djedkhonsuiuefankh, son of Khonsumes and Taat. Djedkhonsuiuefankh can be linked to a multigeneration illustrious family of priests at Thebes. On the top of the base is an appeal to the living, a request for offerings to those who would pass the statue where it was placed in Luxor Temple. Head of a Rain God 10th-11th century Maya This monumental head carved from limestone depicts a supernatural being. Its subject is defined by skeletal features and wears large earflares and a beaded headband. Long hair is held back and indicated by deep incisions flowing down the reverse side of the head. A circular boss dominates the forehead, probably representing a round jewel hanging down from the headband. This head, now detached, likely belonged to an architectural sculpture in high relief as part of a façade or as a free standing monument. Deities such as the one depicted here were seen to have a different type of vision than humans by the Maya, and artists indicated this through the eyes. The prominent eyes, framed by heavy brows and under-eye lines that terminate in scrolled shapes, have an incised spiral-shaped pupil with traces of red pigment.
