Statuette of the God Horus, Son of Wedjat Made 305 BCE-30 BCE Egypt. Egyptian gods were commonly depicted with human bodies and animal heads. The animal referred to the godís personality or characteristics, not his or her appearance. For example, this version of Horus, in the guise of the son of the goddess Wedjat, is shown with a lion head, expressive of power. The Greeks and Romans took these mixed forms literally rather than symbolically, and some Classical authors, accustomed to gods in human form, derided the Egyptians for their ìridiculousî gods, dismissing them as ìdog-faced Egyptians, dressed up in linen.î Statuettes like these were offered to the gods to askfor their help or in thanks for their assistance.. Nefertum 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period The god Nefertum was born out of a lotus flower on the mound of creation; thus he was closely connected with the sun, creation, and with the lotus, but also, more broadly, sweet-smelling, pleasant things. Nefertum was the son of Ptah and of the lion-goddess Sakhmet, and is sometimes envisioned as the son of Bastet or certain other great female lion goddesses. He had a martial aspect, but also a protective one, mirroring some of the contrasting but complementary qualities of Sakhmet and Bastet. In later periods, his protective aspect expanded and he was a symbol of good fortune, which perhaps in part explains his prominent role as a subject for statuettes and amulets.In copper alloy statuettes, he is shown, almost without exception, as a beautiful man who wears a crown comprised of a lotus blossom framed by menat symbols and topped with two tall feathers; the menats derive from his association with feline goddesses. Funerary figure of Qebehsenuef. Dimensions: H. 8 × W. 3 cm (3 1/8 × 1 3/16 in.). Date: 1100-332 BC.These elaborate composite glass figures of the Four Sons of Horus also show traces of gilding. The date of the figures is quite uncertain. They are likely to be pre-Ptolemaic given the strongly sectional use of color, but until a careful study is done of the style of such figures through time more cannot be said with any certainty. Statue of the Goddess Sakhmet ca. 1390-1352 B.C. New Kingdom This lion-headed figure represents the goddess Sakhmet, whose name means "the powerful one." Sakhmet was goddess of war, violent storms, and pestilence. Shabti of Seniu ca. 1525-1504 B.C. New Kingdom The shabti of the chief steward and scribe Seniu is a particularly fine example of this type of funerary figurine from the early New Kingdom. It is inscribed with the spell ensuring that the shabti will perform certain kinds of labor for the deceased in the afterlife. This work included maintenance of irrigation canals, and cultivation of the fields. The shabti was discovered during excavations by the Museum's Egyptian Expedition. Nude female holding monkeys ca. 945-525 B.C. Third Intermediate Period-Late Period This figure is part of a repertoire of figures created in a distinctive spotted faience from dynasty 22 into dynasty 26. The center of production was the eastern Delta, in particular Bubastis and Tanis; this was an area where Near Eastern peoples had long been interwoven in the population; at this time it was also a center for the settlement of Libyan tribal peoples. Possibly these conditions influenced this particular production. Through their appearance, the figures all allude to the goddess Bastet. In particular, many details evoke the myth termed "The Return of the Faraway Goddess." The feline / leonine Bastet was angry with the god Re and left Egypt for Nubia. Re wanted her back again, so he sent the god Thoth, who, taking the form of a monkey, lured her back with fables. Bes, musicians and dancers accompanied the train of the returning goddess, whose arrival brought the return of good fortune to Eg

Mummy Board of Gautsoshen. Dimensions: L. 176 cm (69 5/16 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 21. Date: ca. 1000-945 B.C..The burial equipment of Gautsoshen, including a single coffin (23.5.7) and this mummy board, was found in the Pit. The board is made of a single plank of sycomore wood, with smaller pieces used to fill in the shoulders. It was plastered and then painted with colorful decoration on a white background. Gautsoshen wears a blue wig with decorative bands across the lower tresses, a fillet, and large round earrings. As is usual for the coffin of a female, she crosses her open hands over the broad collar that is draped around her shoulders and across her chest. The tips of her breasts, covered by round disks, are visible just below the bottom edge of her wig. The lower part of the coffin is divided into square sections containing religious scenes. Date: ca. 1336-1323 B.C..Haremhab was a royal scribe and general of the army under Tutankhamun. He continued to serve during the reign of Aya and eventually succeeded Aya as king. This statue was made before Haremhab ascended the throne. By having himself depicted as a scribe, Haremhab declares himself to be among the elite group of literate individuals, thus following a tradition more than a thousand years old of depicting great officials as men of wisdom and learning.He sits erect, but relaxed, his gaze slightly down. Across his knees he unrolls a papyrus scroll on which he has composed a hymn to the god Thoth, patron of scribes. A shell containing ink lies on his left knee. Standing Figure 3rd-7th century Teotihuacan A sculptor created this standing figure, whose legs were broken intentionally in antiquity, from a dense green schist. The figure stoically gazes forward with arms at its side. The disproportionately large head displays conventionalized features: a squared off head and ears, arching brows, and slightly protruding, partially open mouth. The ear holes, eyes, and mouth likely once held ornaments or inlays of shell, pyrite, or another precious material. Further drill holes under the ears may have been used to attach perishable materials such as clothing or a ceremonial bundle. Subtle, fluid incisions and raised areas indicate the rib cage, bend of the arm, wrist bones, and fingers. The surface is finely polished. Standing figures of this scale and three-dimensional form are exceedingly rare in the corpus of Teotihuacan sculpture, with only about a dozen known examples. On her head she wears the customary hieroglyph for her name over a vulture cap and an echolonned wig. Her nurturing breasts are round and prominent as is characteristic of the Ptolemaic Period. Kneeling statue of Hatshepsut ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom At least eight, and perhaps as many as twelve small kneeling statues of Hatshepsut are thought to have been placed somewhere in the uppermost court of her temple at Deir el-Bahri. In these statues Hatshepsut is represented wearing the khat headcloth, and she offers a nemset vessel with a djed pillar superimposed on the front. It has been suggested that the combined use of the headdress, the vessel, and the djed pillar, which symbolizes endurance, is intended to evoke the setting up of a djed pillar at a kings rejuvenation festival, or Heb Sed. Canopic jar ca. 712-664 B.C. Third Intermediate Period A set of four canopic jars was an important element of the burial in most periods of Ancient Egyptian history. Canopic jars were containers in which the separately mummified organs would be placed. The best known versions of these jars have lids in the shape of the heads of protective deities called the four Sons of Horus. The human-headed Imsety was the guardian of the liver; the baboon-headed Hapy looked after the lungs; the jackal-headed Duamutef was responsible for the stomach; and the falcon-headed Qebehsenuef cared for the intestines.The lid of the jar here is removable, but the cavity is not large enough to hold an organ. Column with Hathor-emblem capital and names of Nectanebo I on the shaft 380-362 B.C. Late Period Hathor columns began as 'sistrum-columns' - columns assimilated to the shaft of a sistrum with capitals showing on opposite sides heads of Hathor topped by a naos-sistrum sound-box. This form had a long history from the beginning of the New Kingdom. But especially with the Late Period, a four-sided capital or an abacus (the uppermost column element, above the capital) with Hathor-emblems on each side becomes widely used, and in these cases the term sistrum-column is no longer correct. These Hathor columns with representations on four sides relate to an understanding of Hathor as a cosmic and powerful goddess, her face directed to the four corners of the earth.Hathor columns were particularly favored at temples connected with goddesses or with mammisi-temples ( "birth houses"), which were devoted to the birth of the divine son of a goddess. Date: ca. 1479-1458 B.C..In her terraced temple at Deir el-Bahri, there were at least ten over life-sized kneeling statues of Hatshepsut. She is shown as a male king wearing a kilt, a false beard, and either the white crown of Upper Egypt (as in this statue), or the <i>nemes</i>-headcloth (see 29.3.1 and 30.3.2). In her hands she holds round offering vessels, called <i>nu</i>-pots, and the inscription on the base of each statue identifies the offering she makes to the god Amun. These huge statues flanked the processional way along which Amun's image was carried toward the temple's main sanctuary during a yearly festival. Funerary Mask of the Overseeer of Builders Amenhotep. Dimensions: h. 50 cm (19 11/16 in); w. 42 cm (16 9/16 in); d. 45.7 cm (18 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 18. Reign: reign of Thutmose III. Date: ca. 1479-1425 B.C..This mask was made for a man named Amenhotep who was an overseer of builders. Several small fragments of papyrus are stuck to the front surface of the mask. These come from a Book of the Dead papyrus that also belonged to Amenhotep. Two leaves of this papyrus (30.8.70a and 30.8.70b) are also displayed in gallery 117, as is the mask of a woman who was probably Amenhotep's wife (30.8.68). New Kingdom, Ramesside During the Ramesside Period busts of family ancestors were set into niches in the walls of houses of the village of Deir el Medina, or placed in tombs in the cemeteries there. Bastet holding an aegis 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Bastet, here shown as a cat-headed goddess, was a powerful protective figure who also was known for her fertility. She could be represented with a lion head as well, but as a cat-headed goddess her peaceful traits were emphasized. Her personal adornments and garments are elaborate on statuettes, often more so than other goddesses, and she usually carries numerous attributes. This figure holds a protective lion-headed aegis and probably once held a sistrum in her other hand. Her dress has a complex striped pattern. Bastet does not always wear a decorated dress, but it is much more common for her than for other goddesses. The patterning highlights its intricacy and quality; also, as some have suggested, the vertical banding may recall the striped fur of a cat. Upper part of a figure of a seated official Middle Kingdom ca. 1850-1800 B.C. This sculpture preserves the torso and head of an official. The position of the arms and the tilt of the head and back indicate that he would have been seated, perhaps cross-legged on the ground, with his hands resting on his lap in the pose of a scribe. Padiamunrenebwaset, son of Irethoreru, holding a seated statue of Osiris 4th century B.C., late Ptolemaic Period This statue depicts the priest Padiamunrenebwaset. Padiamunrenebwaset has balanced, slightly smiling features with very long narrow eyes. The priest's fingertips curl very slightly to hold a seated figure of Osiris.The lower part of the statue is located in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo, and was discovered in the Karnak Cachette and matched by Egyptologists. Together the two fragments depict the individual in a long kilt with a projecting front; the lower part also reveals that the statue of Osiris is actually seated on a tall pillar that merges invisibly with the skirt in the upper part of the statue, but appears beneath the skirt next to Padiamunnebrewaset's feet. The inscriptions on the statue's skirt reveal that Padiamunrenebwaset was a prophet of Khonsu in Thebes Neferhotep, and state that he served for 80 years, probably an ideal span as it is sometimes claimed by other o

Neith. Dimensions: H. 14.2 cm (5 9/16 in.); W. 2.7 cm (1 1/16 in.); D. 4.4 cm (1 3/4 in.). Date: 664-332 B.C..Neith was a powerful goddess with many different aspects, but was perhaps best known in the first millennium BC as the goddess of the powerful city of Sais in the Delta. In copper alloy she is represented in anthropomorphic form. She wears the red crown, otherwise known as the Lower Egyptian crown, and the long form-fitting dress common to many goddesses. Her arm position suggests that she may have held a scepter in her outstretched hand and perhaps an ankh sign in the other. Sometimes on more elaborate figures, her crown is striped, usually with precious metal inlay, as seen on 26.7.846. This figure stands on a small plinth that had an inscription, which is now illegible. Although Neith was worshipped from the beginning of Egyptian history to the end, her cult grew to great prominence in the 26th dynasty, when her cult center Sais became the capital of the Saite dynasty king

Amun 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Amun was one of Egypts most celebrated deities, worshipped as a universal, cosmic god and frequently called the king of the gods. In copper alloy he is almost invariably shown, as here, in anthropomorphic form wearing a short kilt and a tall double feather crown with a sun disc, which alludes to his solar and cosmic aspects, including his conflation with the sun god Re. Further elaborations on this statuette include a broad collar and arm bands. His right hand is socketed for the attachment of an attribute. Amun gained tremendous popularity in the New Kingdom when he became a kind of national god, and this continued into later periods.
