Bronze statuette of Harpokrates. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: H.: 2 1/16 in. (5.2 cm). Date: 1st-2nd century A.D..Small votive figurines of Harpokrates (the infant Horus) are common, especially in Egypt where he was an important deity in local popular religion. He wears the pschent (the double crown of the Two Lands of Egypt) and carries a cornucopiae in his left arm. He is shown with his forefinger to his lips, a pose that dates back to the New Kingdom in the Late Bronze Age. Jasper statuette of a man wearing a toga 1st century A.D. Roman The toga was worn only by Roman citizens, and until A.D. 212, citizenship was restricted to the freeborn male inhabitants of Italy and a few privileged groups in the provinces. Jasper is a rare and expensive stone, so this statuette must have portrayed a prominent member of the citizen body, perhaps the emperor himself in the guise of the Princeps (First Citizen). Statuette of a Male Offerant. Unknown 300-100 B.C. Statuette of an offerant or priest wearing a toga draped over his left shoulder and a foliate crown with five leaves. The extended right arm, broken above the elbow, originally would have held a patera for pouring libations. The missing left arm likely projected out from the left hip and held a round incense box (pyxis). The solid-cast figure is flat, with schematic facial features and drapery. On the back of the statuette, Perugia is written in black ink (19th or early 20th century cursive). It was once mounted on a modern marble block (golden yellow marble with dark reddish veins, giallo antico), inscribed in black pencil on the underside Penate. Late Etruscan.

Man squatting with head resting on his hands on his knees 332-30 B.C. Ptolemaic Period This statuette belongs to a late type from Egypt seen in limestone or bronze depicting a nude individual resting with his hands and head on one or both knees. One interpretation connects these with mourners depicted in earlier tomb reliefs. There are also small faience figures from Rhodes sometimes termed 'temple boys'' that are related in pose, as well as Hellenistic statuettes of 'Ethiopians' apparently representing crouching and waiting servants. This figure's large head, haggard features and fatigue are notable; a servant is probably intended, but the meaning of his fatigue or dejection is not clear to us.. Limestone statuette of a temple girl 3rd century B.C.-1st century A.D. Cypriot Temple girls are a rare variation on the temple boy sculptural type. They are distinguished by their longer hair, which contrasts with the shorter curls worn by their male counterparts. This girl, too, is not adorned with chains of apotropaic pendants and amulets, as many of the temple boys are. Harpokrates. Dimensions: H. 15.5 cm (6 1/8 in.); W. 3 cm (1 3/16 in.); D. 7 cm (2 3/4 in.)H. (with tang): 17.4 cm (6 7/8 in.). Date: 7th-4th century B.C..The figure represents a child god in a striding/standing position, wearing the double crown, which alludes to his royal status. The child god is distinguished from adult gods by a range of iconographic clues: his nudity, the finger raised to the mouth (a child-like gesture), and the sidelock on the right side of his head. The sidelock was separately cast and mechanically attached using a small pin, which is still visible near the head. Silver inlay, meanwhile, highlights his eyes and the amulet on his chest. The amulet is suspended on a string that knots at the back of the neck, and it is a common attribute for child gods.Child gods grew in popularity and cult from the Third Intermediate Period onwards, rivaling even the most powerful and ancient gods, especially as temple offerings. Stirrup Spout Bottle: Figure Carrying Deer 12th-5th century B.C. Cupisnique Cupisnique potters depicted a broad range of animals on their ceramic vessels, usually those that figured prominently in their mythology. Deer, widely distributed on both American continents, were an important food source and a favorite in myth and art. On this burnished blackware vessel, a small, naturalistically rendered deer is being carried on the broad shoulders of a heavy, seated man. The man's head, covered with a conical cap, leans forward with his load. His hands hold the front and hind legs of the animal. His face bears incised geometric designs, perhaps representing facial paint, tattoos, or scarification practiced in ancient times. The image of a man carrying a deerperhaps a hunter carrying his bootyis an enduring one, known from many depictions on ceramics made in later times. Vase with daffodils 1902 Designed by Artus Van Briggle Artus Van Briggle began his career in ceramics at the Rookwood Pottery, but because of respiratory issues, moved to Colorado, where, with his wife Anna Van Briggle, he established his own pottery in Colorado Springs in 1901. The Van Briggles and some other designers produced models from which molds were made, and the vases were then slip-cast in multiple forms. They were particularly noteworthy for their glazes in satiny soft textures in unusual colors, sometimes one or more combine on a single piece. Like many American artists, Artus Van Briggle had traveled to and studied in Paris in the late 1890s and was much influenced by not only the artistic ceramics he saw there, but much of the French art that was on exhibition. Van Briggles early work often exhibits the stylistic characteristics of the Art Nouveau, especially in the sinuous curves of the stems on his floral-decorative vases. It hunches, shoulders forward, collared neck tucked in, and braces its forearms against its knees to better hold a lost object, perhaps a rod or a chain, in its hands. The head is inclined forward; the parted mouth, flared nostrils, and direct gaze communicate alertness. This work was probably part of a now lost group of animal sculptures and may have decorated a fountain.Probably modelled after a living macaque monkey; this life-sized sculpture captures the species' physical features, posture, and energy with a high degree of naturalism.
