Date: early 19th century.Although most Polynesian peoples appear to have made and used human images, few such objects have survived to the present day. Most were destroyed under the influence of Christian missionaries, who viewed such sculptures as "graven images." Small female figures in ivory were known from the Tongan archipelago as early as the late eighteenth century. Formerly referred to as goddesses, these figures are now thought to represent important female ancestors. A number of Tongan ivories were traded to the neighboring Fiji islands, where they were used during religious rites. This particularly expressive example was collected on the Fijian island of Viti Levu by the Reverend Cyril G. Hawdon in 1868. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Female Figure 12th-10th century B.C. Tlatilco This solid, hand-modeled ceramic figurine is reddish buff in color. Its short arms are splayed to the sides and the legs are spread far apart. A tiny navel and small breasts are indicated on the front of the figure, and a skirt with hem continues to the backside. Pendant-like ears () flare slightly to either side of the face, and a fairly elaborate panel of hair with incised striations adorns the elongated head. Sculpted some three millennia ago in the Valley of Mexico, this figurine belongs to a group of ceramic effigies known collectively as the Tlatilco "pretty ladies." Depicting females with large heads, small waists, and prominent hips, these handheld sculptures present a fairly standardized body type and are typically fired to red, buff, or brown tones. As the popular embodiments of an ideal feminine form, the Tlatilco "pretty ladies" are part of a centuries-long tradition in which eccentricities and religious imagery predominate. Fe

Large Kneeling Statue of Hatshepsut ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom On the upper terrace of Hatshepsut's temple at Deir el-Bahri, the central sanctuary was dedicated to the god Amun-Re, whose principal place of worship was Karnak temple, located across the Nile, on the east bank of the river. During a yearly festival, called the Beautiful Feast of the Valley, the god's image was transported across the river to the west bank. Carrying the god in his sacred barque, the festival procession followed a roadway lined with sphinxes that led to Hatshepsuts temple. On the middle terrace, the pathway was flanked by colossal kneeling statues that represented Hatshepsut as the ideal Egyptian king - a young man in the prime of life. Some of the statues were depicted wearing the white crown of Upper Egypt (30.3.1). Others, like this one and 30.3.2, wear the nemes-headcloth. Fragmentary Head of a Man, Belonging to a Block Statue ca. 1550-1070 B.C. New Kingdom Despite the fact that upper part is now missing and the facial features are altered, details suggest this fragmentary head was part of a block statue, a common statue type for non-royal persons where the sitter was sculpted in a squatting posture. Block statues were essentially temple statues, being deposited in temple precincts and forecourts. It is possible to perceive the original quality of the sculpture, like the finely carved strands on the wig or the modelling of the cheeks, leading to date it on stylistic grounds to the New Kingdom..
