Crouching child god holding scepter 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period The figure represents a child god in a squatting position. He holds the crook which alludes to his royal status, and he once wore a crown, which is now broken. The child god is distinguished from adult gods by a range of iconographic clues: his nudity, the finger raised to the mouth (a child-like gesture), and the thick sidelock. Often child gods in this position sit on lotus buds, a flower whose imagery resonates with the associations of rebirth and regeneration attributed to child gods.Child gods grew in popularity and cult from the Third Intermediate Period onwards, rivaling even the most powerful and ancient gods, especially as temple offerings. The best known is Horus the Child (Harpokrates), who was the son of Isis and Osiris, but many others existed, including Khonsu the Child, Ihy, and Harsiese, among others. Double-headed figure 2300-2200 B.C. Valdivia Some of the earliest known works of art in western South America have been found on Ecuador's Santa Elena Peninsula, where the Valdivia peoples produced small stone and ceramic figurines. These latter statuettes were produced from two slabs of clay pressed together to form the torso and legs. Predominantly female, these figurines often depict women in various stages of their lives. There are examples, however, of figurines with both male and female characteristics, as well as figures, like the one pictured here, which display more than one individual. As seen in the figurine here, two female heads and torsos emerge from a shared lower body. The women's faces are tilted slightly and their expressions are formed by small horizontal incisions. Both figures have short caplike hair and round prominent breasts, appearing from the waist up as mirror images of each other. Marble anthropoid sarcophagus last quarter of the 5th century B.C. Graeco-Phoenician The lid of the sarcophagus shows an unarticulated, downward tapering body and the head of a woman framed by flowing hair; traces of red paint are still preserved in the hair. At the foot end of the box and on the lid appears the Phoenician letter "shin." According to recent investigations, the anthropoid sarcophagi of marble were quarried on the Greek island of Paros. They were prepared up to a certain point and finished at their destinations. The inscribed letters here strongly suggest that the sculptor was Phoenician, which would be entirely plausible at Amathus and Kition, two centers of Phoenician occupation on Cyprus. Mold for the Bust of Demeter or Kore. Attributed to Shop of Zopyras, Ra and La 4th century B.C. Front mold of a bust of Demeter or Kore wearing a veiled polos (cylindrical crown) and holding a torch at her right shoulder. Her hair is pulled back and composed of wavy well-defined locks. She wears pendant earrings, with the right earring a bit shorter. She has a full rounded face with lidded eyes. The back of the mold is inscribed with four Greek characters: rho and alpha at the top, pi and upsilon on the lower right. The inscription is shorthand for, ZOPYRAS, RA, two names associated with the workshop that created the mold, "Zopyras, Ra, and La," active in the mid-fourth century B.C. Study Models of Parts of the Body. This group of small models of parts of the body are carefully copied after famous sculptures, in particular by Michelangelo, in Florence and Rome. They came from the workshop of the Nijmegen sculptor Johan Gregor van der Schardt, who had a successful career in Italy, Nuremberg, and Copenhagen. They are extremely rare examples of the, in part autograph, study material of a 16th-century sculptor.
