Isin-Larsa This brick, found during excavations at the city of Nippur, is stamped with the inscription of Bur-Sin (ca. 1895-1874 B.C.), a king from the city of Isin. Although partially broken, the inscription can be restored on the basis of other bricks from this king, also found at Nippur.Bur-Sin,the shepherd who satisfies the heart of Nippur,the strong plowman of Ur,the one who restores the ordinances of Eridu,the lord worthy of the mes in Uruk,the king of Isin,the king of Sumer and Akkad,the spouse who is the ornament of the sacred lap of Inanna(translation adapted from Cuneiform Texts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Vol. I, No. 118)Such brick inscriptions were used to memorialize kings who undertook pious acts of restoring or rebuilding the temples of the gods. Babylonian () The god Marduk first became an important god in the early second millennium B.C., when Babylon (under its most famous king, Hammurabi) became the capital city of a large Babylonian state. Marduk’s importance in the pantheon of gods rose with the fame of the city of Babylon, so that in later periods he was the supreme deity. This hymn celebrates Marduk as the ruler of the universe, a theme that also appears in, e.g., the great Babylonian creation epic known as Enuma Elish. One line requests that the god assigns the insignia of kingship, and it may be that this text was somehow related to or used during coronation rituals.Neatly inscribed on a clay tablet using the cuneiform script, this hymn was written in the late 1st millennium B.C., when the antique writing system was no longer used for communication or administration purposes. Front of a limestone block from the stepped base of a funerary monument mid-6th century B.C. Signed by Phaidimos Inscribed: on the death of Chairedemos his father Amphichares set up this monument mourning a good son. Phaidimos made it.The epitaph consists of two lines of poetry in the special form (dactylic hexameter) that was used at this time to express grief over a death. It is followed by the name of the sculptor, Phaidimos, who is known from two other inscriptions found in Attica. These lines are inscribed to read alternately from right to left and left to right. The Phoenicians, from whom the Greeks derived the alphabet, wrote from right to left. The Greeks soon found that writing from left to right was more convenient, but, until the end of the sixth century B.C., lines of inscriptions were sometimes carved in alternating directions. This method of writing was called boustrophedon (ox-turning) because it turns at the end of each line, as the ox turns with the plow at the end of

The Gwanggaeto Stele is a memorial stele for the tomb of Gwanggaeto the Great of Goguryeo, an ancient Korean Kingdom, erected in 414 by his son Jangsu. This monument to Gwanggaeto the Great is the largest engraved stele in the world.

Cuneiform tablet: letter of Sin-sharra-ishkun to Nabopolassar ca. 2nd century B.C. Seleucid This tablet is a later copy of a letter from the last days of the Assyrian empire. In it, the last Assyrian king, Sin-sharra-ishkun, appears to reach out to the Babylonian king Nabopolassar, recognizing the latters rule and pleading to retain his own kingdom. The letter represents a great reversal in fortunes: despite frequent rebellions, Babylonia had for centuries been held under Assyrian rule, and at the beginning of his reign Sin-sharra-ishkun himself seems to have had some success in suppressing a rebellion there. By the time this letter was written the tide had turned, and, incredibly, Sin-sharra-ishkun repeatedly addresses Nabopolassar as "the king my lord." We do not have the Babylonian kings answer in the form of a letter, but he must have rejected its terms: over the following years a coalition led by Babylonia and Media, a state in western Iran, destroyed the Assyrian capitals, and

The inscription commemorates the philologist Prouses, son of Menekrates from Nicomedia in Bithynia, Asia Minor, who died at the early age of 24.
