Probably once brightly painted, this relief plaque belongs to a series of votive dedications made in Locri Epizephirii, near the toe of Italy, to the goddess Persephone (or Kore), daughter of Demeter. Following her abduction by Hades, god of the Underworld, Persephone regularly returned to earth, dictating the seasons and making agriculture possible. Palmyra was an ancient city in Syria. It was an important city in central Syria, located in an oasis 215 km northeast of Damascus and 180 km southwest of the Euphrates at Deir ez-Zor. It had long been a vital caravan city for travellers crossing the Syrian desert and was known as the Bride of the Desert. The earliest documented reference to the city by its Semitic name Tadmor, Tadmur or Tudmur (which means 'the town that repels' in Amorite and 'the indomitable town' in Aramaic) is recorded in Babylonian tablets found in Mari. The Temple of Bel is an ancient stone ruin located in Palmyra, Syria. The temple, consecrated to the Semitic god Bel, worshipped at Palmyra in triad with the lunar god Aglibol and the sun god Yarhibol, formed the center of religious life in Palmyra and was dedicated in 32 CE.

Panel with Scene from the Life of a Saint second half 11th century North Spanish On this panel four men hoist what appears to be a palm tree, or possibly a column, over a nude male figure, who lies on the ground and touches the tree trunk. Whether a violent or healing act, the scene may depict an episode from a life of a saint, considering that it was carved in a monastic workshop known for its use of ivory and inventive narrative imagery. Coinciding with the rise of the Christian kingdoms, the eleventh century saw a growing interest in the depiction of saints stories, and particularly those of early Spanish martyrs.. . These panels once formed part of a continuous decorative border (frieze) at the base of a temple. On both fragments human figures are shown walking through a hilly, wooded landscape. It is not known for certain which story they depict, although they areprobably scenes from an old Javanese poem. The two squares at upper left represent birds-eye views of walled enclosures.

Furniture plaque carved in relief with warrior holding lotuses ca. 8th century B.C. Assyrian This ivory panel was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. Like many other panels from the same storage room, it was part of a chair or couch back or the headboard of a bed. Twenty pieces of furniture were discovered stacked in orderly rows in this room, where they had been stored before the destruction of the Assyrian palaces in 612 B.C. The decoration of the panel is divided into three sections. At top, a figure with the body of a winged sun disc and a female head holds two blossoms in her outstretched hands. In the center, a bearded male figure wearing a long robe belted at the waist, a hat with an upside-down conical projection on its peak, and elaborately strapped sandals extends both arms to grasp the tendrils of a tall plant. Date: ca. 8th-7th century B.C..This curved, trapezoidal ivory plaque was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. It depicts a human-headed winged sphinx walking to the right, trampling a collapsing figure who seems to be nude, and who raises his head to face right while lifting his left arm, palm facing outward. Three of the sphinx's legs are those of a lion, as is typical, while unusually the left front appears to be a human arm; the sphinx places its human hand atop of head of the collapsed figure it tramples. The sphinx wears an Egyptian-style wig and broad collar necklace, with a headdress in the shape of a compressed disc. Relief fragment showing fishing scene ca. 2575-2465 B.C. Old Kingdom Fishing in the Nile river was a scene commonly depicted in ancient Egyptian tombs. In this relief, from the tomb of an Old Kingdom official, several men are shown pulling in a large fishing net that is mainly still in the water. The net itself is depicted below and features several trapezoidal floaters that kept the top close to the waters surface. Caught in the net are many different types of fish. They are depicted in such detail that their species can be determined—see for example the so-called elephant-nose fish with their typical elongated and rounded snouts (at the bottom right and the fifth fish from the left)..
