Marble portrait of the co-emperor Lucius Verus. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: H. 14 1/2 in. (36.8 cm). Date: A.D. 161-169.This fragmentary head comes from an over-life-sized portrait bust or statue of Lucius Verus, co-emperor with Marcus Aurelius (r. A.D. 161-180). At the beginning of his reign, Verus was sent to the East to direct military operations against the Parthians, and although the war was concluded successfully in A.D. 166, his returning troops brought back the plague, which ravaged the Empire for several years thereafter. He is compared unfavorably with Marcus Aurelius by the ancient sources, but the portrait shown here has a leonine majesty that gives little indication of his reputation as an idle and dissolute ruler. It is typical of Antonine style in its use of luxuriant drillwork in the hair and engraved eyes to dramatize the basically naturalistic image. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Marble head of Zeus Ammon ca. A.D. 120-160 Roman Zeus Ammons sanctuary at the Oasis of Siwa in the Libyan desert was already famous when Alexander the Great made his pilgrimage there in 331 B.C. Alexanders visit to Siwa was a pivotal moment in the young kings extraordinary life. The details are shrouded in mystery, but legend has it that the Oracle proclaimed him son of Zeus Ammon and answered Alexanders questions favorably, “to his hearts desire.” This powerful portrait of the god combines a classical Greek image of the bearded Zeus with the rams horns of the Egyptian Ammon, an attribute with which Alexander himself was sometimes represented. The Roman imperial portraits are an important medium of mature propaganda and witnesses of the self-image of the Caesaren.This bust shows undoubtedly emperor commodus - with full name Marcus Aurelius Commodus Antoninus -, 161 AD as the son of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius and Faustina of the Younger in Lanuvium was born. 192 AD, a violent death ended his excessive life and rule. The head is turned to his right side. The elongated, wrinkled face with its pale-looking expression is edged by voluminously deserted, curled main hair and a massive composed. The hairs are artfully developed by a sponge-like bore. The portrait is completely on front view, applied to façade action. The eyes are pouring, the eyelids hang down and lie in deep caves. Commodus wears a tank with underwood and a dirt heel (lat. Paludamentum) with fringe edge held together on the right shoulder with an agraffe.
