Saint John the Baptist, c. 1505, Benedetto da Rovezzano, Italian, c. 1474-1552, 19 11/16 x 16 1/4 x 8 3/4 in. (50 x 41.28 x 22.23 cm), Terra cotta, Italy, 16th century, During the Renaissance, busts of Saint John the Baptist as a boy were commonly displayed in Florentine homes. Saint Johns fine and innocent face and curly hair embody the ideal of youthful beauty at that time. Benedetto da Rovezzano made this bust in Florence when Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo were leading the artistic scene in town. When Michelangelo left for Rome in 1508 to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling, he asked Benedetto to finish his bronze David (now lost)—a testament to Benedettos ability. Benedetto da Rovezzano also worked for the royal courts of France and England and thus was instrumental in spreading the Renaissance style beyond Italy.

Marble portrait head of Antinoos ca. A.D. 130-138 Roman Antinoos, the young beloved of the Roman emperor Hadrian, drowned in the River Nile during an imperial visit to Egypt in A.D. 130. In accordance with Egyptian custom, the distraught emperor initiated a cult venerating the dead youth, for the Egyptians believed that those who met such a death became assimilated to Osiris, god of the Underworld. Outside Egypt, numerous statues of Antinoos were erected that represented him as a beautiful youth, often in the guise of Dionysos, a Greek god closely related to Osiris. This head is a good example of the sophisticated portrait type created by imperial sculptors to incorporate what must have been actual features of the boy in an idealized image that conveys a god-like beauty. The ovoid face with a straight brow, almond-shaped eyes, smooth cheeks, and fleshy lips is surrounded by abundant tousled curls. Mask of a woman with an ornate curled bang and loop earrings A.D. 98-117 Roman Period, Trajan The plaster masks derive from pharaonic traditions, in which the mask served as a substitute for the head of the deceased and as a means of elevating him or her to immortal status. The derivation is often reflected in paintings and texts located on the mantle surrounding the head. Like the painted mummy portraits, the masks suggest strongly individualized appearances and affect Roman fashions in hairstyle, jewelry, and dress. They follow, however, a somewhat different pattern. For example, female masks may have coiffures that combine Roman arrangements of the upper part of the hair with long corkscrew locks that were considered typically Egyptian. Despite the seeming individuality of the masks, most faces were made in a mold. Distinguishing details were worked in the plaster with a spatula or knife. Limestone head of a wreathed youth 4th-3rd century B.C. Greek, South Italian, Tarentine The wreath of ivy leaves and korymboi (ivy berries) identifies the youth as a follower of Dionysos, if not the wine god himself. The sculptor made masterful use of the soft local limestone to contrast the smooth flesh with the tousled hair and projecting ivy. Traces of paint remain in the hair..
