Mars, Francis van Bossuit, c. 1680 - in or before 1692 The naked mars is on the left leg with the weight and has put the right foot slightly forward. His head is somewhat bent to the right. With the left hand he holds a sheath at the height of the left hip, from which he pulls the sword with the right hand. The left -hand underarm and the sheath are covered by a slipped cloak, which depends on the ground. Against Mars's left leg stands a shield with a Medusa head. Its beauty and fame are mentioned three times in ancient literature, and over twenty-five full-size marble copies are known. This copy was owned by the Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani of Rome, who, during the first third of the seventeenth century, formed one of the earliest European collections of ancient art. Scholars had not yet identified this statue type as the Polykleitan Diadoumenos, and an incorrect head and arms were added to complete the figure. These have since been removed.. Clytie 1869-70; carved 1872 William Henry Rinehart American American Neoclassical sculptors frequently mined classical mythology for thematic inspiration. In book 4 of the Metamorphoses,” the Roman poet Ovid tells the story of Clytie, a water nymph who was abandoned by Apollo, the sun god. Clytie gazed inconsolably at the sun for nine days, languishing nude, without food or drink. For her constancy, she was changed into a sunflower so that her face would forever follow the sun as it moved across the sky. Rinehart subtly evoked Ovid’s story by depicting a drooping sunflower in Clytie’s right hand. The tree stump with live sunflower plants serves both to enhance the narrative and to offer tensile support for the marble figure.. Clytie. Alabaster group of Aphrodite and Eros, Said to have been found near Byblos, Lebanon. 150-50 BC The ship's rudder and the dolphin allude to her maritime nature she may be Aphrodite Euploia (of fair voyage), a patron deity of sailors. She is shown wearing elaborate gilded jewellery that includes a diadem, necklace, cross-strap between her breasts, and arm-bands. Traces of gilding also survive on Eros's wings and the whole group was brightly coloured.

Between the reliefs in the Vierschaar (Tribunal), or court of justice, in the Amsterdam Town Hall, Quellinus placed four female caryatids - weight-bearing sculpted figures - personifying Remorse (with their hands covering their face) and Penance (with bound hands).

Dionysus the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, he was worshipped from c. 15001100 BC by Mycenean Greeks other traces of Dionysian-type cult have been found in ancient Minoan Crete. His origins are uncertain, and his cults took many forms; some are described by ancient sources as Thracian, others as Greek. In some cults, he arrives from the east, as an Asiatic foreigner; in others, from Ethiopia in the South. Dionysus was the last god to be accepted into Mt. Olympus.
