Fragment of a Kneeling Figure 1001-1400 Mali. Little is known about the meaning and function of the terracotta figures discovered in various sites around the abandoned city of JennÈ-Jeno in modern Mali. Archaeological excavations revealed that figures like this partial example were set into the walls and foundations of buildings, suggesting they served a religious purpose. The loincloth and stack of bracelets on this figure indicated high social rank. Head of a Central Asian Figure 12th-13th century This head belonged to a full figure most likely representing a royal attendant (courtier, vizier, or amir) or guard. Similar images have been found in wall paintings of the reception hall of palatine complexes, typically flanking or facing the enthronement area. In their regality and power, suggested on this head by the jeweled headdress, they conveyed the very essence of rulership and authority in the visual arts of the Great Seljuqs and their successor states.. Limestone figure of kneeling Herakles late 6th or early 5th century B.C. Cypriot This very fine sculpture shows Herakles as an archer. He has a quiver and scabbard, and was probably shown drawing his bow. The scale and pose suggest that he originally stood in a pediment. The subject and treatment of the drapery clearly reflect Greek influence; indeed, the archer strongly recalls his counterpart in the west pediment of the temple of Aphaia at Aegina.. Head of a Canid, possibly a Jackal 664-332 B.C. Late Period The classification of wild canids, for instance, the Egyptian jackal, Canis lupaster, and the wild dog living at the margins of the Egyptian desert, causes problems even for zoologists. It is not surprising, therefore, that the ancient Egyptians did not distinguish particular canid species in their representations of gods, such as the necropolis god Anubis; Duamutef, one of the four sons of Horus; or Wepwawet, the god of Asyut, a town in Middle Egypt. This sensitively modeled plaster head could have served to depict any of these deities. The use of plaster and the rough, unmodeled area around the ears indicate that the head was cast in a mold. Recent research has shown that Egyptian artists used a variety of finely graded plaster materials for trial pieces and finished works of art.This small head is in a class with Old Kingdom "reserve" heads and the famous New Kingdom plaster portraits from an artist's studio at Amarna. Openwork furniture plaque with a rearing goat. Culture: Assyrian. Dimensions: 6.3 x 2.95 x 0.47 in. (16 x 7.49 x 1.19 cm). Date: ca. 8th century B.C..In this fragmentary, openwork plaque, a rearing goat balances its forelegs on the intertwining tendrils of a stylized plant, nibbling on the leaves at the top. This piece was found in a large storeroom at Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was probably used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. A rectangular tenon preserved below the lower edge suggests that it may have been fitted into a frame, likely as part of a piece of furniture. The goat's large eye, which bears traces of blue paste into which a colored glass or semiprecious stone inlay would have been set, is emphasized by incisions along the brow, as are its snout, ears, beard, mane, and ribs. Furniture plaque: lion. Culture: Old Assyrian Trading Colony. Dimensions: 2.87 x 1.38 in. (7.29 x 3.51 cm). Date: ca. 18th century B.C..This plaque in the shape of a seated lion belongs to a group of carved ivories, mostly furniture elements, probably found at the site of a palace at Acemhöyük in central Anatolia. It closely resembles another plaque in the same group which is also in the Metropolitan Museum's collection (36.152.5). The mane is shown in the form of individual tufts, each ending in an upturned curl, with a row of smaller locks separating it from the face. The mouth is open in a roar, showing numerous teeth. An inlay originally fit into the eye socket, but is now missing. The overall gray color indicates that the object was exposed to considerable heat, perhaps during the destruction of the palace. Lotus-Headed Fertility Goddess Lajja Gauri ca. 6th century India (Madhya Pradesh) Lajja Gauri is shown in a birthing posture but does not display the swollen belly of one about to give birth, which suggests that the image is of sexual fecundity. The lotus flower in place of her head makes this association with fertility explicit. This expression of the concept of the female body as the embodiment of life-affirming forces is perhaps the most extreme in Indian iconography. At her left is a diminutive kneeling figure, undoubtedly the donor. This miniature sculpture was reportedly found in the Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh, central India. Model of a temple door bolt with recumbent lion 400-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Small Late Period and Ptolemaic reliefs or sculptures that depict a subject in a partial or unfinished way but are themselves finished objects constitute a special class of object. Guidelines like those for artists are often prominently exhibited as part of the object, although, in fact, many instances can be noted where the object simply could not serve as a suitable model for a traditional formal Egyptian representation. Personifications of kingship, figures that may represent the now emerging demigods Imhotep and Amenhotep Son of Hapu, and popular gods like Harpokrates or Isis, are heavily represented within the corpus. Taken together, the figures represented and the other features indicate the reliefs and sculptures of this class, sometimes called by Egyptologists "sculptors models / votives," were the material of a donation practice, perhaps connected with the prolific temple building of thes

(15.88 x 6.51 cm), Bronze with green patina, Egypt, 7th-1st century BCE, When the Greeks established dominion over ancient Egypt in 332 BCE, they adopted many of the Egyptian godsand renamed them. Their new name for the god Horus-the-Child was Harpocrates, and this depiction of him dates from that era of Greek rule, called the Hellenistic period. It shows typical markers of childhood, including the god’s nudity, the side braid, and a finger in his mouth. As a matter of fact, the position of the hand to the lower lip or chin was the physical representation of the hieroglyph for 'child.'

Capital with Acanthus Leaves 10th century This capital probably came from the splendid Umayyad royal residence city of Madinat al-Zahra', near Cordoba, Spain, which was founded in 936. The classical tradition so important in Umayyad Syrian art is evident here. This is not surprising in light of the Syrian roots of this caliphal house (711-1031), which arose in Spain after the Umayyad dynasty was replaced and almost extinguished by the new 'Abbasid rulers centered in Baghdad.. Partial Shu Amulet ca. 664-332 B.C. Late Period Depicted here is Shu, the god of the air, with his arms raised up in a right angle and palms facing the viewer. His beard is braided and he wears a long wig with a uraeus at his forehead. Preserved is only the top part of his body, but from similar pieces we know that he must have been kneeling. This position together with his raised arms show him as the carrier of the sky. During creation Shu separated the earth and sky by lifting up the latter. A sun disk is on his head, which alludes to the sky and the gods role in the creation of the world. A small loop on the back of the head indicates that this figurine functioned as a pendant.. Date: early 300s.The sculpture portrays two key episodes from the biblical story of Johan in succession: first, he is thrown overboard during a great storm at sea and swallowed by a great fish; then, after three days, Jonah is saved when the fish vomits. A testament to the power of faith, the Jonah story was embraced by Christians as foretelling the story of Jesus' resurrection from the dead after three days.
