Hercules with the Broken Column, Jan Pieter van Baurscheit (I), c. 1722 - c. 1728 On a square plinth, Hercules with the left leg stands forward in front of the profiled pedestal of the broken column, which he clamps with his left arm and whose top with the right arm and hand against his hip. His gesture head is whole, the upper body is used to the right. The lion's skin, which is held against the column by the left hand, hangs down to the floor between the legs. Dancer Looking at the Sole of Her Right Foot (First State) modeled probably ca. 1895-1910, cast 1920 Edgar Degas French Upon Degas's death in 1917, more than 150 figurative sculptures were found in his studio. Most were made of fragile wax, clay, and plastiline (a wax- and oil-based modeling material). Many had deteriorated. Only a few were preserved in copies that had been cast from them in plaster. Except for the wax Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (Washington: NGA) none of these sculptures had been publicly exhibited during the artists lifetime.Although Degas had not favored reproducing his sculptures in more permanent materials, his heirs authorized that copies be cast in bronze in order to preserve the compositions and to sell them as finished works. Painted sandstone sculpture of King Nebhepetre Mentuhotep II (reigned c. 2061 BC 2010 BC) was a Pharaoh of the 11th Dynasty who reigned for 51 years. Around his 39th year on the throne he reunited Egypt, thus ending the First Intermediate Period. Consequently, he is considered the first pharaoh of the Middle Kingdom.

Cambodia: Late 12th century, sandstone, Bayon style Lokeshvara (Avalokiteshvara) statue from the Gate of the Dead, Angkor Thom, now housed in the National Museum of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. The National Museum, housed in a red pavilion built in 1918, holds a collection of Khmer art including some of the finest pieces in existence. Exhibits include a 6th century statue of Vishnu, a 9th century statue of Shiva, and the famous sculpted head of Jayavarman VII in meditative pose. Particularly impressive is a damaged bust of a reclining Vishnu which was once part of a massive bronze statue found at the Western Mebon Temple in Angkor.

Bronze statue known as Apollo of Piraeus, 530 B.C.

Part of a throne with deity on a bull ca. late 8th-7th century B.C. Urartian Urartu was a powerful kingdom that rivaled the Assyrian Empire in the first millennium B.C. It extended from northeastern Turkey into northwestern Iran. Its settlements were palace-fortresses that protected agricultural production and supported many crafts, especially an extensive metalworking industry. In the late seventh century B.C., Urartian centers were destroyed by an enemy whose identity remains unknown.This object, with the lower part of a figure standing along the flanks of a bull, was most likely part of a throne. From better-preserved examples, we know that the figure wore the horned crown of a deity. The whole would have been gilded. A throne and footstool supported by four deities and their animal companions would have been a potent symbol of the Urartian king's power.
