Isis and Horus 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Isis name is first attested in the fifth dynasty in the Pyramid texts. She was the wife of Osiris and the mother of Horus, and thus was symbolically mother to the pharaoh. In the Late Period, the popularity of this important goddess dramatically increased. She is nearly always depicted in anthropomorphic form, standing or seated on a throne. This statuette shows the goddess in her most beloved pose, nursing her son Horus (known also as the lactans pose). Other goddesses sometimes nurse Horus or other child gods, but Isis is preeminent among them in this role. She wears the horned crown that by the Late Period she had adopted from the goddess Hathor. The large number of statuettes in this particular pose demonstrate some of the qualities for which Isis was most valued in the first millennium BC: her role as a life-giver and protector. Harpokrates in a double crown 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period The figure represents a child god in a striding/standing position, wearing the double crown, which alludes to his royal status. The child god is distinguished from adult gods by a range of iconographic clues: his nudity, the finger raised to the mouth (a child-like gesture), and the sidelock on the right side of his head. He wears an amulet on his chest, another attribute common to child gods but not adult gods. Crossed lines at the back of the neck show where the suspension cord ties.Child gods grew in popularity and cult from the Third Intermediate Period onwards, rivaling even the most powerful and ancient gods, especially as temple offerings. Figurative Element from Ceremonial Drum ?: Seated Female and Child 15th-17th century Mbembe peoples This spectral relic of a maternity figure was carved hundreds of years ago by a Mbembe artist working at the confluence of two major sculptural traditions - those of Cameroon and Nigeria. It is one of only a dozen related works that may have been created as early as the seventeenth century making them the oldest wood sculptures to have survived south of the Western Sudan. Each of these figures was originally an integral part of a monumental carved drum positioned at the epicenter of Mbembe spiritual life. The exposure of all of the surviving examples to the elements over extended periods of time has resulted in intensive weathering that has become a dramatic dimension of their aesthetic. This is one of three Mbembe depictions of the subject of mother and child - each of which is unique. With one hand she is supporting her child while offering her breast to him to suckle with the other. Isis was the sister-wife of the god Osiris. Imhotep 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Imhotep was adviser to King Djoser in the third dynasty and he is credited with the design of the Step Pyramid in Saqqara, the earliest pyramid in Egypt. For this and other achievements of wisdom and learning attributed to him, in later periods he became one of the only historical non-royal people to be divinized and to have a dedicated cult, which was particularly strong in the Memphite region. In copper alloy statuettes like this one, he is shown sitting, wearing his close-fitting cap and holding a scroll on his lap. Imhoteps scroll serves to emphasize his wisdom and erudition, his role as a patron of scribes, and hints at the many intellectual forays into medicine, architecture, and engineering that were later ascribed to him. Date: 664-30 B.C..The god Nefertum was born out of a lotus flower on the mound of creation; thus he was closely connected with the sun, creation, and with the lotus, but also, more broadly, sweet-smelling, pleasant things. Nefertum was the son of Ptah and of the lion-goddess Sakhmet, and is sometimes envisioned as the son of Bastet or certain other great female lion goddesses. He had a martial aspect, but also a protective one, mirroring some of the contrasting but complementary qualities of Sakhmet and Bastet. In later periods, his protective aspect expanded and he was a symbol of good fortune, which perhaps in part explains his prominent role as a subject for statuettes and amulets.In copper alloy statuettes, he is shown, almost without exception, as a beautiful man who wears a crown comprised of a lotus blossom framed by menat symbols and topped with two tall feathers; the menats derive from

Seated goddess Nephthys, inscribed for Mereskhonsu ca. 715-650 BC Late Period The bright gilded silver statuette of the goddess Nephthys is worked with precision and elegance. The basket-sign is broken away from the emblem on top of her head that represents her name, and three sides of her throne are corroded away. An inscription on the underside of the statuettes base (pictured below) reads: "words spoken by Nephthys, who embellishes the chapels, who gives life, prosperity, health and a long life to Mereskhonsu, justified." The hieroglyphs are calligraphic even to the extent of subverting the images: the n-sign, normally a zigzag replicating waves of water, has become a tightly twisted ribbon; the s-sign, representing a door bolt passing through two catches, is decomposed into two discontinuous elements.The phrasing of the inscription and a loop behind the goddesss head reveal that the statuette was a pendant donated for use in a temple. Harpokrates in an Egyptianizing Crown and holding the club of Herakles A.D. 1st century Roman Period Harpokrates, or "Horus the child," the son of Isis and Osiris/Serapis, is here represented as a chubby toddler with a plump, crooked forefinger reaching toward his small mouth. He holds the knobby club of the Greek god Herakles and on his head wears a vestigial Egyptian double crown detailed with striations and dots. The crown is obscured in the front by a very large sun disk bearing a uraeus. A natural but infequently noted deep blue corrosion gives the piece a rich tone.Harpokrates, the quintessential divine son, was extremely popular and had already been assimilated to other gods during pharaonic times. During the Hellenistic and Roman eras the syncretisms multiplied. The association of Harpokrates with Herakles in these eras seems to be based on warrior characteristics that Harpokrates had acquired in earlier conflations with other dieties. Spectacled Bear Bottle 5th-7th century Moche This ceramic stirrup-spout bottle was sculpted in the shape of a seated, cross-legged spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) with human arms and hands resting on the knees. The bear wears a cream-colored tunic and a headdress tied under the chin, painted using red-ochre and cream slips (a suspension of clay and/or other colorants in water). The creatures face features a broad, vertical white stripe in the center, flanked by two red stripes, emulating both the natural coloration of the bears face and the type of face paint seen on ceramic portraits of human warriors (see accession number 64.228.21). Anthropomorphic animals are often depicted in Moche ceramics—both modelled and painted—as well as in mural painting (Donnan and McClelland, 1999; Trever, 2017). The standing figure is probably wearing a mask and holding either another mask or the head of an image in human form. However, her preserved left hand, which pulls back her hair, recalls the gesture of Venus after she emerged newly born from the sea, the subject of a famous Greek sculptural type of the third to second century B.C.
