Grave Stela, 400-350 BC. Greece, first half of 4th Century BC. Pentelic marble; overall: 128.3 cm (50 1/2 in.). Carved in high relief, the original composition of this Attic grave marker can be reconstructed by comparison with the famous stele of Hegeso in Athens. A maid, who holds a pyxis (small container for personal items) in her left hand approaches a seated matron dressed in a himation (cloak). Much of the lintel above is missing. It would have included an inscription with the deceased's name. The mood is somber and contemplative without any overt expression of mourning.

Forepart of a reclining lion ca. 400-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period This small sculpture depicts the forepart of a reclining male lion lying on his side and with his front paws crossed over each other in a realistic and relaxed position. The lions body is treated in detail, however the depiction of his mane was only partially executed. The size of this artwork together with this feature allows to determine that the piece belongs to an intriguing group of small sculptures and relief works that are often called sculptors models but that may have served as donations.. Column Surround with Pensive Woman 14th-15th century Indonesia (Java) Ornamental roof tiles often decorated houses in the capital of the East Javanese kingdom of Majapahit near the present-day village of Trowulan. Sculptures, molded in clay and sun dried or baked at low temperatures, enhanced and protected the columns of these open, pavilion-like buildings. In this surround for such a column, a woman rests her right elbow on a stylized rock cropping. Dressed in an orthodox Majapahit fashion with a hair arrangement typical of the period, she supports her head with her right hand and gazes outward. Figures such as this often illustrated popular legends of the period, and it is possible that she was part of a larger narrative series.. Column Surround with Pensive Woman. Here the dwarf-like body of Pataikos is combined with what appears to be a baboon's head, judging from the tufts of hair on the cheeks. The back is a falcon back. The headdress has a foliate and curving appearance not typical of Egyptian crowns and is difficult to understand. The proliferation of representations of hybrid deities, or polymorphic deities, is a phenomenon of the first millennium. Furniture support carved in the round with a lion's hind leg. Culture: Assyrian. Dimensions: 9.53 x 2.95 x 1.89 in. (24.21 x 7.49 x 4.8 cm). Date: ca. 9th-8th century B.C..This piece is carved into the shape of a lion's right hind leg. It was found in a large storeroom at Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was probably used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. The leg muscles are softly rendered and the three claws are individually articulated in low relief. A dowel hole that pierces the inner paw and the trapezoidal tenon on which this leg stands suggest that this piece was fitted into a frame, likely as part of a piece of furniture. The inner side of the leg is flat and the upper portion is square-cut with two large, poorly preserved mortises at either side of the thickest area, likely to secure it to the piece of wooden furniture to which it originally belonged. Head of a Hippopotamus ca. 1390-1352 B.C. New Kingdom This extraordinarily lifelike animal head was once part of a hippopotamus statue about three feet in length. Comparisons with other sculptures from the period indicate that it was created during the reign of Amenhotep III. The seated statues that the king dedicated to the goddess Sakhmet are well known; their feline heads display hollow sinewed cheeks and knobby facial bones similar to those on the hippo. This head may have come from Amenhotep's mortuary temple on the west bank of the Nile opposite modern Luxor. This temple was mostly dismantled in ancient times, but the site is marked by two colossal statues of the king known as the colossi of Memnon.Excavators have found another, even larger, hippo statue, also of Egyptian alabaster, at the site. Figurine of Osiris

Alabaster group of Aphrodite and Eros, Said to have been found near Byblos, Lebanon. 150-50 BC The ship's rudder and the dolphin allude to her maritime nature she may be Aphrodite Euploia (of fair voyage), a patron deity of sailors. She is shown wearing elaborate gilded jewellery that includes a diadem, necklace, cross-strap between her breasts, and arm-bands. Traces of gilding also survive on Eros's wings and the whole group was brightly coloured.

Head of a Statuette of Ptah ca. 1550 B.C.-1070 B.C. New Kingdom or later God of the city of Memphis, Ptah was primarily associated with arts and crafts. It is assumed that he acquired his designation as the creator god because of this close connection with crafstmen, builders, and artists. Small votive divine figures in faience, as well as in bronze, were deposited as offerings within Egyptian temples in order to please the gods. Barque Sphinx ca. 664-525 B.C. Late Period Images of gods were carried out of temples on festival days on processional barque-shrines. Most often the image itself was concealed in a shrine, but sculpted heads at the prow and stern identified the god to the populace, small royal statuary surrounded and protected the god hidden in the shrine, and other gods including the one represented here rode at the prow.Solar hymns of about 1400 B.C. identify this divinely poised and alert animal as a "sib," and describe it as "trampling the sun god's enemies." At the prow of the portable barque, its expressive and magical form telegraphed to the crowds the otherworldly nature of the appearance and the forces surrounding it. Alongside the sphinx rode Maat and Hathor, daughters of Re, and with the sib they constituted an entourage inherited from the voyage of the solar barque through the day and night sky. While the goddesses attended to the guidance of the barque, the sib dealt terrifyingly with any
