In 1927, Sappho Marchal, the 23-year-old daughter of Henri Marchal who was overseeing restoration of monuments at Angkor Wat at the time, published a book on the hairstyles, clothes and jewelry of 1,737 images of various apsara she had recorded on the walls and columns of Angkor Wat. It remains probably the most complete account of the many apsara, thevada and other celestial females at Angkor Wat to the present day. Only one of the 1,737 apsara is smiling and showing her teeth. She is located on the inner side of the west portico, just south of the gopuram, almost concealed behind the gateway. It is now generally accepted that many of the apsara represented or were otherwise based upon real women of the Angkor court, but the reason for the - slightly bizarre - toothy grin remains a mystery. Perhaps one of the Angkor stonemasons was in the mood to create something different for a change, or perhaps he had a real earthly maiden in mind - or on his mind.

Plaque: Warrior and Attendants 16th-17th century Edo peoples During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, a remarkable series of works were created to adorn the exterior of the royal palace in Benin City. A seventeenth-century Dutch visitor to the court of Benin, Olfert Dapper, described the sprawling palace complexwith its many large courtyards and galleriesas containing wooden pillars covered from top to bottom with rectangular cast brass plaques. These plaques are understood to have autonomous meaning and to tell complex narratives in relationship to one another. At some point the plaques were removed from the palace facade, as they were no longer there when the British arrived in the region. One scholar has surmised that they "were kept like a card index…, and referred to when there was a dispute about courtly etiquette." Phnom Penh lies on the western side of the Mekong River at the point where it is joined by the Sap River and divides into the Bassac River, making a meet place of four great waterways known in Cambodian as Chatomuk or 'Four Faces'. It has been central to Cambodian life since soon after the abandonment of Angkor in the mid-14th century and has been the capital since 1866. An elegant Franco-Cambodian city of broad boulevards and Buddhist temples, it was considered one of the jewels of Southeast Asia until Cambodia became involved in the Second Indochina War in 1965. Ten years later victorious Khmer Rouge forces captured the city. These extreme left-wing communists, led by the secretive Pol Pot, ordered the immediate evacuation of Phnom Penh causing up to two million deaths during the period 1975-79. During this time the city was abandoned and fell into ruin. Since the defeat of the Khmer Rouge in 1979 it has been gradually recovering, but still bears scars of a terrible past.
