Opaque watercolor on paper, sheet: 8 x 12 1/4 in. (20.3 x 31.1 cm). This painting is from a large series of illustrations narrating one of Hinduisms great epics, the Ramayana. Much of the story takes place in the wilderness, where the hero, Rama, has been exiled. While there, Rama befriends a monkey, Sugriva, who wishes to overthrow his own brother to become king of the monkeys. This painting shows the pivotal battle between Sugriva and his brother, Vali, with Rama (with blue skin) looking on. Sugriva will eventually win when Rama shoots Vali with an arrow. Paintings from this series are characterized by their lively figures, which are almost always set against single-color backdrops with minimal indication of location (here, a single tree). Date: ca. 1336-1327 B.C..In December 1907 Theodore M. Davis, a wealthy American who was funding excavations in the Valley of the Kings, discovered a small pit near the tomb of Seti I. Inside the pit were approximately a dozen large sealed whitewashed storage jars (09.184.1). Among other things, the jars contained bags of natron (a kind of salt), pieces of linen with hieratic inscriptions dated to Years 6 and 8 of a king named Tutankhamun (throne name Nebkheperure). At the time, almost nothing was know about Tutankhamun, and Davis declared that he had discovered the king's tomb.Davis received a number of the jars and their contents in the division of finds and, in 1909, he gave most of his share to the Metropolitan Museum. The book contains the Christian history of salvation in print: from creation, fall, life of Mary, life and passion of Christ to resurrection, Ascension, Pentecost and Last judgment. In addition, the book contains two performances by Maria as a heavenly queen on the crescent. A large part of the prints were made by Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsans and are part of his series: De Kleine Passion. The first part of the gospel, according to Matthew, was included in Dutch (Mat. 1: 1-17) preceded by a title page (2 pages). In the front and in the back one parchment bract with recto and verso handwriting in Latin. It is a series in which the performances tell the story. As the title of this edition indicates (stupid Passye), this book contains virtually no text but mainly images. Amsterdam

Date: 10th-11th century.Only the inscribed portion of this textile has survived. The kufic script and the interlaced border framing the inscription have been stamped in gold and outlined in red. The benedictory phrase is commonly found on objects throughout the Islamic world, often with the name of the recipient, as is the case here. Nothing is known about the owner, Abu 'Abdallah ibn Nasr, but he probably belonged to the middle-class to afford such a personalized object. The shape and small size of the inscription may indicate that the fragment was originally part of a handkerchief. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Ceremonial Skirt Made 1875-1900 Democratic Republic of Congo. Individually worked panels were sewn together to create this expansive skirt embellished with a kinetic array of patterns. The central floating motifs add lightness, especially when contrasted with the black-and-white checkerboard edge. Kuba men are responsible for preparing and weaving raffia, while Kuba women cut the appliq˙e shapes freehand to decorate the cloth. To make a skirt of this size, several women from the same extended family would construct different sections.The abstract forms may represent stylized humans, animals, plants, and objects. Constituting a kind of encrypted script, the repeating motifsóincluding circles, lozenges, and L-shapesófunction as building blocks for the entire design.
