Pair of wall lights. The airy, elegant style of these wall lights is characteristic of the 1780s. The rams heads, the thyrsus (staff wound with laurel branches) and the bunches of grapes refer to Bacchus, the god of wine. Wall lights of this particular model were ordered by various members of the French royal family.

Presentation Smallsword with Scabbard of Admiral Marriot Arbuthnot (1711-1794) dated 1780 British Admiral Marriot Arbuthnot (1711-1794) was presented with this sword by the residents of the English island of Jersey (Channel Islands) for having saved them from attack by the French fleet in 1779. A band wound around the grip bears a Latin inscription that reads in translation: "The Island of Jersey, delivered, presents this in gratitude, 1780." Candelabrum with woman playing flute (one of a pair) 1834-39 Aimé Chenavard These tall and impressive candelabra were part of an important centerpiece commissioned by Ferdinand-Philippe, duc dOrléans, in 1834. Delivered to the Palais des Tuileries, the royal residence in Paris, on April 20, 1839, they would have decorated the dining table together with other gilded bronze and stone-mounted pieces. The main element of this centerpiece, or surtout de table,were naturalistic animal combat and hunting groups created in bronze by the sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye. Pendant in the form of a ferret 16th century Northern European The size of this jewel and related ones (see also 17.190.892; 17.190.893; 32.100.298; and 32.100.306) is such that only the closest viewer could appreciate their full beauty and dexterous execution; they represent the finest craftsmanship for the wealthiest patrons. Each combines gold with natural treasures, such as pearls and gemstones. Bulbous baroque pearls cleverly suggest the fluffy down of a swans underbelly or a cloudy mass supporting the Crucifixion. Tiny figures are enameled in the round. Melding the secular and the sacred, these jewels were made to be worn: pinned to garments or hanging close to their owners skin. The animals might be heraldic devices; the swan, for example, could symbolize the Society of the Virgin Mary, called the Order of the Swan, which was founded in mid-fifteenth-century Brandenburg in Germany.[Elizabeth Cleland, 2017. Fan Handle (Ke'e) 1820-50 Marquesan (Enata) people Fans in the Marquesas were carried by prominent individuals of both sexesas marks of social status. Displayed at feasts and other events, their visualimpact was enhanced by the elegant manner in which they were carried,especially by women. Made from narrow strips of plant fiber, the blades werewoven around dagger-like wood handles (ke'e), sometimes sheathed in asleeve of bone. The earliest fan handles were apparently unadorned, but bythe early 1800s, artists began to decorate them with numerous small tiki(human images). Smallsword ca. 1650-60 French, probably Paris While it was typical in Europe from at least the Middle Ages for a nobleman to wear a sword on a daily basis, not until the sixteenth century was there a pronounced difference between the swords worn with armor during times of war and those worn with civilian dress or in peacetime. During the Renaissance noblemen regularly wore long, lethal, and frequently ornate swords known as rapiers, both for self-defense and as a necessary costume accessory. In the early seventeenth century rapiers became smaller, lighter, and more refined, developing into what are known as smallswords, which continued to be worn by gentlemen until the late eighteenth century.This early smallsword is a rare and beautiful example of the form, design, and ornamentation that distinguishes the best French swords of the early Louis XIV period. It consists of four parts: the screw with the handle and the button, the table clamp, the baluster, the fish. The handle and the button of the screw are decorated. The table clamp consists of two acorns, which are connected to each other with an S-shape and four leaves. The baluster is soldered on the upper leaf, which forms one whole with the beakdment of the fish. A spring is installed in this animal so that the mouth is closed. There is a hole in the upper glans of the table clamp, with a thread on the inside. Incised horse frontlet carved into the shape of a flowering, volute palmette tree ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian This ivory plaque is carved into the form of a flowering, voluted palmette emerging from a wide stalk. The crowning floral ornamentation includes volutes, leaves, and a central, oval bud, all outlined with incision. The stalk is ornamented with two blank bands just below the floral capital, with an additional, fringed band bordering the lower edge. The six holes drilled into the lower edge of this piece and suggest that it was fastened to another material, perhaps a textile or leather backing that has not survived. Originally, this piece was probably used as a frontlet, an equestrian bridle-harness ornament which adorned a horses forehead. Over two hundred ivory and gypsum alabaster equestrian bridle-harness ornaments have been found at Nimrud. The majority, including this frontlet, were found in a large storeroom (Room SW 37) at Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nim

A wrap or cloak went over the tunic. Shoes and hosiery, fastened with buckles, covered the legs. Earrings, necklaces, and hairpins completed the ensemble.Aspects of this dress changed from the 300s to the 600s, and brooches in particular convey changes in taste. From the 300s to the 500s, pairs of small brooches, in an array of inventive shapes, held the wrap in place. By the 600s, a single large disc brooch, usually elaborately decorated, served the same function. Smallsword 1778 French By the early seventeenth century, the rapier, a long slender thrusting sword, began to dominate as the gentlemans weapon of choice. During the course of the century, however, as civilian fencing techniques became more specialized and refined, the rapier developed into a lighter, trimmed-down weapon known by about 1700 as the smallsword. Smallswords, often richly decorated, remained an integral part of a gentlemans wardrobe until the wearing of swords in civilian settings went out of fashion at the end of the eighteenth century, at which time pistols were replacing swords as arms most frequently used in personal duels. The majority of smallsword hilts are made of silver or steel, but many also employ a wide variety of luxurious materials, such as gold, porcelain, and enamel.
