(14.0 x 15.2 x 11.4 cm), Wood, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 19th century, Historically, headrests were a powerful piece of property in Yaka and Songo societies because of the spiritual energy they conveyed to the user during sleep. Unlike other cultures where headrests were passed down through a family as an heirloom, the Yaka and Songo viewed their headrests as personal property. Male authority figures and matriarchal heads primarily used them to denote status in society. Because their cultural values have changed, modern Yaka and Songo societies no longer use headrests.

Footed Vessel 14th-15th century () Maya () This vessel is carved from a translucent stone, commonly known in Mexico as tecali. Named for the town of Tecali de Herrera in southern Puebla where abundant sources are known, the stone is also found in central Oaxaca and in the southern Maya lowlands. Tecali is often referred to as Mexican onyx; it is, however, not agate but a calcite, a soft stone, similar in appearance to alabaster. It was a valued material throughout ancient Mesoamerica and many ritual and luxury items were made from it. At Teotihuacan, masks, statuary, and vessels of various shapes are fabricated from tecali. During the last centuries before the conquest, effigy vessels, often of substantial size, in the shape of deities and animals such as monkeys or coyotes, were carved from it in many parts of Mesoamerica. . Art objects from the Islamic Mamluk dynasty found their way to the Christian West early on. This basin was made in Syria or Egypt for the Sicilian court. It bears the arms of Elizabeth of Carinthia (c. 1300-1350), Queen of Sicily, alongside Arabic and Christian ornament. Such exotic vessels were used as baptismal fonts or for ritual hand washing.

Shigaraki Ware Mizusashi (Tea Ceremony Fresh Water Jar) Shigaraki Ware Mizusashi (Tea Ceremony Fresh Water Jar), ca. 1620. Buff stoneware with ash glaze, lacquer lid; Shigaraki ware, 6 x 6 1/2 in. (15.2 x 16.5 cm). Whereas most potters take care to filter rocks out of their clay, the potters of the Shigaraki region understand that the texture created by rocky bits of quartz and feldspar adds tactile and visual interest to their wares. The artisans add only minimal glaze, letting the surface retain its graininess. Shigaraki, east of Kyōto, has been a kiln site for centuries, originally making utilitarian pieces such as storage jars and mortars. When the tea ceremony gained popularity in the sixteenth century, Shigaraki ceramicists were quick to adapt to the tea masters demands for rustic but engaging vessels, such as this deceptively simple water jar.
