Originally part of a deluxe weapon, the lock plate's entire surface is inlaid with an exquisite floral pattern in gold. Carefully chiseled, the fanciful hammer takes the form of an animal head crowned by a mass of foliage. The double eagle on the wheel plate suggests the weapon was made for a member of the Hapsburg family.

This machine, however, was already known in antiquity, given that Leonardo did nothing more than re-elaborate the Odometer devised by Heron Alexandrinus, a Greek inventor who lived in the First century AD. Unlike the former one, the Odometer that Leonardo designed was shaped a little like a push cart and had a toothed wheel mechanism. Each time the wheel on die ground turned, the vertical toothed wheel turned once, in turn actuating a horizontal wheel. The latter contained metal balls or stones, which fell through a hole into a bucket: counting them at the end of the journey allowed the distance travelled to be calculated.

Bronze double-action water-pump. Roman Probably 3rd century AD. From Bolsena, Italy. This pump had two pistons which were raised and lowered by a rocking-beam. The pistons were housed in two cylinders. At the bottom of each cylinder was a non-return valve. When one of the pistons was raised, the valve was pushed open and the water rose inside the cylinder. When the piston reached its highest point the valve closed, trapping the water inside the cylinder. On its downward stroke, the piston forced the water out through a side pipe. It then passed through a second valve into the central discharge pipe where it drained away.
