Upright (Giraffe) Piano ca. 1830-40 Carl Lang This type of piano is known as a "giraffe piano," which has an assymetrical case that is shaped to the length of the strings of a piano from the longest bass strings to the shortest treble strings. It was but one type of case developed by piano makers in the early nineteenth century, during an innovative period of piano design. A wide variety of upright pianos were developed that included among others so-called pyramid pianos and lyre pianos. Technical description: Case of mahogany veneer, the harp-like upper portion bordered with mother-of-pearl inlay surrounding a pleated silk panel covering the strings, the inlays mainly in the form of 4-point stars; keybed supported at both ends by carved gilt mermaids; the panel enclosing the front of the case below the keyboard having a recessed figured-veneer rectangle with a smaller inlaid oval panel centered above the pedals; compass FF-g4 (75 keys), mother-of-pearl naturals, dark-stained accidenta

Hurdy-Gurdy - a grinding organ, originating in France. the sound is produced by the vibration of the strings maintained by the friction of the wheel bringing them in contact. Melody is formed by keys 'stopping' certain notes, whilst other continue the drone, in an effect similar to Bagpipes. Date: 1929

Piano Harmonica ca. 1870-96 J. B. Cramer & Co. The J. B. Cramer & Co. firm was known for its reed organs and harmoniums. However, this innovative instrument uses a grand piano action to strike metal tongues to produce sound, instead of the strings found inside of a piano. Walnut case held together with large screws, rectangular when viewed from above, without legs or stand, enclosing a keyboard (compass 61 keys, ivory naturals, ebony accidentals) that controls a simple English grand piano action whose felted hammers, extending forward toward the player, strike thin steel tongues; these tongues are graduated in length and width and are screwed at the back end to a metal bar that extends beneath a removable wood panel; panel, bar, and tongues can be removed as one unit, and are mounted above the piano action in a raised portion of the case, covered by a hinged lid and fronted with a cloth-backed fret-work panel; the keyboard is covered by a fallborad holding a hinged music rack, below wh

The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Bell Harp - Invention attributed to John Simcock a soldier in a regiment of Dragoons and dates from around 1700. The harp is sounded by using a plectrum on either thumb and the player holds the harp by the wooden projections to the side of the frame, swinging it up and down! Date: 1929
