Lock 15th-16th century European The decoration of Gothic iron locks and keys was often elaborate and of the highest standard of workmanship. The motifs were frequently drawn from Gothic architecture, reproducing on a miniature scale complicated tracery patterns and even tiny statuettes. A number of these tiny locks were compound, with some of the mechanisms concealed from view, and required two or even three keys used in sequence to open them. It has been suggested that the greatly expanded use of locks on doors, or coffrets and other types of storage chests was a result of the increasing urbanization of life and the new emphasis on material wealth and private ownership which developed in the late Middle Ages.. Shield facing in sheet bronze. 400-300 BC. From the river Witham near Lincoln. The boss is ornamented with complex raised and engraved motifs highlighted with red coral stud. It exhibits great style, quality and technical expertise yet re-used sheet bronze forms the facing. The outline of a stylised boar disappears behind the boss: it is preserved in differential corrosion and nail holes and belongs to the original period of use.

Textile Fragment 13th-14th century The appliqué design on this linen textile is executed in a color similar to the base fabric. On one edge, four pointed lappets are suspended from the rectangular fabric by a row of threads. The lappets alternate between two designs. The rectangular section of the fragment is bordered on two sides by a vine scroll and a trefoil motif in the corner. In the center is a quatrefoil rosette surrounded by stylized tendrils. Evidence of a second rosette remains on the top edge, suggesting that the original size of the textile was much larger, two or even four times the size of the surviving piece..
