Nova totius terrarum orbis geographica ac hydrographica tabula. To the right reverend father in God John by divine permission Ld. Bishop of Oxon. this map is humbly dedicated. "III" in top left corner. Top border depicts the seven planets and bottom broder depicts the seven wonders of the world, and the four elements and seasons at the sides. Appears in The English Atlas.. Regions and Seasons: In Greek mythology, the Horae - a group of three rain-giving goddesses - ruled over natural order and the seasons, and through their gift of water from the heavens they brought agricultural wealth to the earth. Carpo, Thallo and Auxo represented spring, summer and winter. By the 4th century BCE, a fourth season - autumn - was added to the group. This 1680 map of the world illustrates the four seasons in the right margin with Latin names: Ver (Spring), Aestas (Summer), Autumnus (Fall) and Hyems (Winter).
