(31.8 x 21.3 cm). Date: 1903.Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. Here, he depicts the Strand on a rainy night with figures beneath umbrellas and in horsedrawn carriages hurrying past the Chairing Cross Hotel and railway station entrance. Densely laid slanted lines suggest falling rain with passages of white paper used to convey bright electric light reflected off the wet pavement. The elevated, off-center viewpoint, and diagonal lines of the composition recall such celebrated ukiyo-e prints as Hiroshige's "Sudden Shower over Ohashi Bridge at Atake.". At Rome Richard Cooper II British, Scottish 1774-75 Born in Edinburgh, Cooper II trained as an engraver under his father, then studied in Paris with Jacques Philippe le Bas (1707-1783). He made these drawings during a visit to Italy in 1771-76 and, until recently, they were preserved in an album that descended in the family. Interestingly, each composition relates closely to a drawing in a sketchbook that Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797) used in Rome in 1774-75 (57.102.1(1-44)). These visual links suggest that the two artists sketched together and took it in turns to use an optical instrument. Nocturne: Palaces 1879-80 James McNeill Whistler American Nocturne: Palaces is one of the most evocative of Whistlers Venetian etchings. A gas lantern casts rays of light into the gathering darkness and acts as a focal point for a meeting of palace walls, canals, and a footbridge veiled by atmospheric haze. The delicate streaking of the ink in the upper and lower portions of the sheet creates effects similar to monotype achieved through careful wiping. Whistler trimmed the print to the plate line, leaving a small tab where he inscribed his butterfly signature, establishing the idea of a limited edition. He printed this work three years after returning to London from Venice, for an 1883 exhibition at the Fine Art Society. In 1886, it was published by Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau in Twenty-Six Etchings (the "Second Venice Set").. Nocturne: Palaces 359320
