Date: ca. 1150-1200.Mischief and humor abound on the ten architectural supports set around the perimeter of this gallery. Naked grimacing acrobats wrestle and pull violently at each others' beards; a snarling beast proudly claims a bone. Similar mischievous, and sometimes mystifying, motifs are often found on corbels set just under the eaves of the roof on the outside of a church.Notre-Dame-de-la-Grande-Sauve, the church from which these corbels come, was situated on one of the routes to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. Set next to a great forest (the silva major from which its name comes) and dominating a hill overlooking the Gironde River, its community grew from seven monks at its founding in 1079 to some 300. Angel. Culture: French. Dimensions: 23 x 16 1/2 x 11 3/8 in. (58.4 x 41.9 x 28.9 cm). Date: ca. 1130.Seemingly afloat in midair, with its windblown drapery, this angel once graced the voussoir, or wedge-shaped stone, set in an arch of the portal on the north transept of the cathedral dedicated to Saint Lazarus in Autun. The angel's attention originally was focused on the scene of Jesus raising Lazarus--patron saint of the cathedral--from the dead, depicted in the tympanum centered over the doorway. The angel is one of a handful of physical remains of the twelfth-century portal, which was replaced with a Baroque doorway in 1776. The main entrance of the cathedral is carved with the name Gislebertus, believed to be the principal author of the sculptural program. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
