Design for an Altar, Giuseppe Barberi, Italian, 1746-1809, Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash, graphite on lined off-white laid paper, The sepulchrum stands as a sarcophagus in the hollow of the mensa, framed laterally by panels. In the center of the furniture rises the tabernacle, having laterally two angels with candle brackets. At right, beside the mensa, is another project for the tabernacle. It has the shape of a canopy hanging from a crown which is supported by the arms of two standing angels who open the curtain with their hands. A chalice seems to be represented upon the door. Recueil de Decorations Intérieures 1812 Pierre François Léonard Fontaine French This image offers an example of Charles-Honoré Lannuier's incorporation of contemporary French design in his production of furniture for elite New Yorkers. Although the Albany Institute of History and Art's Van Rensselaer bedstead (1951.61) is not an exact copy of the image seen here, American patrons would have accepted it as an authentic version of the French taste. The book's authors, Percier and Fontaine, served as the official designers for Napoleon and heavily influenced the appearance of Empire-style wares produced in both Europe and America through the publication of the serial Recueil de décorations intérieures, which premiered in 1801 and was issued as a complete volume in 1812.. The architectural setting and the scheme of the lower part are variations of -1352. The upper part of the sarcophagus is covered by a fringed cloth. Above is a low broad pedestal, whose front tablet is intended for the inscription. Upon it stands two female allegories embracing each other with the inside arms supporting with the outside hands respectively, a branch and faces. An oval medallion is outlined below in front of them. At right is another suggestion for the group: the pose is changed to make room for the medallion. It is supported by the inside hands, and the arms crossing each other. In the medallion is a bust portrait of a bearded man. Date: 1780-1795. A candlestick, in elevation, resting on upper and lower pedestals. The lower pedestal, supported by lion's feet, is flanked by terminal, winged, caryatid cherubim (or seraphim) perching on curling volutes; in between is a central panel depicting a scene of sacrifice (a figure with arms outstretched is between two standing figures flanking a bull () splayed on the altar). Between the lion's paws at the base (on the lowest rectangular block), there is a scalloped lunette with an urn at its center, from which hang paired festoons. At the top of the lowest pedestal, the wings of the addorsed cherubim terminate in a frontal, bald-headed mask with fin-like jowls. These cherubim support the stepped, base molding (scored with a stylus) of the upper pedestal which is flanked by two ram heads, with garlands hanging from their mouths, above two animal masks. Design for a Main Altar, Giuseppe Barberi, Italian, 1746-1809, Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash on lined off-white laid paper, The central part of the retable has the shape of a niche, in front of which, below, is a panel with two festoons, above a picture, probably the Virgin, carried by angels upon clouds into heaven. On top of the circular frame are two angels. In the height of the upper angular edge of the frame is, laterally, an entablature. It is curved and projecting at the front, the outer end being supported by a column, the inner one by a pilaster, belonging to the wall of the niche. The entablature projects also to the back wall, the supports being similar. Above the entablature, laterally and at the front, are angels. On top of the niche is a triangular pediment with two sitting angels. In the outer panels of the zone of the pedestals are escutcheons. Steps are to lead downwards into the hall in the three central bays. Chandeliers with burning candles hang in each bay. The upper parts of the backs of the two lateral bays are undefined, but dados are at the bottom. Rich decoration in a kind of early rococo. The wall panels are to show alternatively statues standing on pedestals and flanked by candle brackets and trophies of attributes of Cupid under canopies in the upper parts, and console tables with candle brackets before mirrors. Under the top centers of the mirrors are medallions with a fleur-de-lys each. Design for a Main Altar, Giuseppe Barberi, Italian, 1746-1809, Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash on lined off-white laid paper, The retable has the shape of a niche, framed by two embedded columns and outside by two more at the ends of the receding backward part. The columns stand upon pedestals which in their turn stand upon a base. In front of the base is the mensa on top of a sepulchrum; in front of the frieze, below the niche, is the tabernacle. In the niche stands a figure with extended arms upon a pedestal beside which two angels sit. Laterally, the base ends with projecting round pedestals, either of them with a group consisting of a saint or an allegory, apparently upon clouds with cherubim or angels.
