A Tomb and Studies of Windows in the Church of Valmont Abbey (recto); Four Studies of Horses (verso) 1829-31 Eugène Delacroix French This drawing of the church at Valmont in Normandy shows Delacroixs masterful handling of the wash medium to create a shadowy ambience. During his visits to his cousins estate there, Delacroix was especially transfixed by the partially ruined fifteenth-century church on the property, which appealed to his Romantic imagination. After his first trip, he recalled, "Above all, the old church, half-ruined, where there were tombs, great Gothic windows with dark stained glass, and vaults containing the foundations of the abbey, all of these things inspired a host of romantic ideas." The dreamlike atmosphere conjured by the artist in this wash drawing corresponds with his written reflections on the church as a space of reverie.. The lower pedestal is high rectangular with a low base, the height of which is indicated as "3/4"; so is that of the fluted frieze. Laterally are fluted pillars with masks instead of capitals. For the inside of the framed panel a filling with marble seems to be intended. The upper pedestal is broad rectangular. In its panel are two sitting putti with a book. The height of its plinth and of its entablature is given as "5", so is its upper width. The height of the lower pedestal is "7". Usual background. Date: ca. 1790. Monument of King Louis XVI of France, Giuseppe Barberi, Italian, 1746-1809, Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash, graphite, red ink on off-white laid paper, Funeral decorations for King Louis XVI of France. The elevations of a pyrmaid with a rectangular sockle, standing upon a base. In the middle of the base are four steps, at its corners stand candelabra consisting of four superimposed bag calyces and supported by sitting griffins, with a flame. The sockle has below a moulding, which forms the door frame. Trophies of weapons fill the remainder of the sockle. The door frame is decorated above with a festoon. Above the entablature are a moulding with an inscription and a triangle with a trophy as a pediment. In the upper part of the pyramid is an oval bust portrait, framed by the slope of a festoon.
