Relief Frieze 6th century Coptic A lion and leopard sprint toward the center of this wood lintel, while other animals sit peacefully. Peacocks of paradise guard a gemmed cross between billowing curtains, draped and held behind two columns. A continuous, decorative stem of vines, flowers, and bunches of grapes encircle the animals in six medallions, creating a motif known as rinceau. The original bright blues, pinks, and greens would have enlivened the decoration of the lintel. The artist merged classical motifs that would typically represent prosperity with Christian themes, possibly illustrating a biblical passage (Isaiah 11:6). Banteay Srei (or Banteay Srey) is a 10th century Cambodian temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and is located to the north-east of the main group of temples at Angkor. Banteay Srei is built largely of red sandstone, a medium that lends itself to the elaborate decorative wall carvings which are still observable today. Banteay Srei is sometimes referred to as the 'jewel of Khmer art.'.

Fragment of Molding with a Leaves Pattern 6th-7th century In the 500s Apa (Father) Jeremias founded a Coptic monastery at Saqqara, the ancient Egyptian necropolis (cemetery) of the city of Memphis, near the oldest pyramids. He and the earliest monks lived in tombs at the site. As the monastery grew, several grand churches with lavish decoration were built, as well as many chapels, public buildings, and complexes of cells (rooms) for each monk. The monastery continued to grow after the Arab conquest with materials from early Byzantine tomb structures being reused for additional monastic structures. Inscriptions record prayers to numerous holy figures. Sculptural elements from Saqqara are often carved with deeply undercut patterns to intensify the play of light and shadow and to mask the solidity of the architecture. Date: ca. 1510.The panels' decorations, which include putti holding heraldic shields or strings of beads, floral scrolls, masks, and fabulous creatures, correspond to French adaptations of Italian motifs derived from prints and other sources. The portraits represent the donor, Georges d'Amboise (1460-1510), in his cardinal's hat and cloak and Louis XII (1462-1515; ruled 1498-1515) surrounded by a wreath topped by a porcupine, a symbol of the monarch's courage and ability to defend his kingdom.
