Eli Whitney's Patent for the Cotton gin, March 14, 1794. Whitney did not intend to sell the gins. Rather, he anticipated charging farmers for ginning their cotton, asking two-fifths of the value, to be paid in cotton. Resentment at this greedy scheme, coupled with the mechanical simplicity of the device, resulted in the gins unauthorized manufacture and sale. Whitney received some relief when the South Carolina legislature voted $50,000 for the rights for that state, and North Carolina levied a license tax for five years, from which about $30,000 was realized for Whitney (BSLOC_2019_7_75)

Butterfield, William circa 1889-1890 A broadly representative selection of drawings for building and manufacture of designs, representing the various types of commissions Butterfield received and illustrating his work in promoting Gothic Revival. Also included are estimates as well as record drawings (measured drawings) of buildings not designed by Butterfield. William Butterfield (1814-1900) was a British architect known for the Gothic revival style he championed. He studied with E. L. Blackburne and set up his own practice in 1840. A member of the Cambridge Camden Society, later the Ecclesiastical Society, he contributed designs to their journal The Ecclesiologist. Most of his work was for church designs, apart from that for schools and colleges (Rugby School and Keble College Oxford), and the Winchester County Hospital. French textile manuscript, ca. 1820, This manuscript, an instruction manual for a school associated with a manufactory begins with a history of silk manufacture and continues with discussion of contemporary silk makers in Spain, Italy and France. The text is illustrated with 136 intricate drawings of looms, many in watercolor, showing set-ups for various patterns and materials, and includes 102 tipped-in examples of fabric. The chapters contain detailed information on silkworms and their breeding, the pulling of silk, and the composition of fashion materials, including gauze and damask.

Arca Noe, (building the ark), by Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680). Published Amsterdam 1675. Athanasius Kircher, a Jesuit, was a polymath and Jesuit. The Arca Noë was based on strict Catholic orthodoxy. In it, he describes the condition of the world before and after the great Flood, lyrically relates the actions of Noah, and goes to great lengths to depict the Ark itself.
