Panel with the Kiss of Judas early 16th century French Until 1950 this panel lined the Great Hall of Highcliffe Castle in southern England. Constructed in the 1830s for Lord Stuart de Rothesay, the castle was furnished in part with stonework acquired form the ruined royal abbey at Jumièges in Normandy, where the panels might also have originated. In all likelihood they once decorated the backs of choir stalls ordered in 1501 by the abbot of Jumièges. Carved on The Cloisters' thirty-five oak panels (50.147.1-38) are scenes from the lives of the Virgin and Christ, each set under an elaborate canopy of single or double arches. The exuberant latticework surrounding the arches provides an almost encyclopedic display of pinnacles, crockets, spirals and other fanciful decorations. Giacomo was started in 1454 by Domenico di Capodistria, and the upper registers were probably completed by Giovanni Dalmata in 1465. The structure is of octagonal plan, with elaborate architectural sculpture on the exterior of the building: the portal decoration is particularly rich in detail. To each side of the door are rows of niches with statues of saints. Directly above the door is the dedicatory inscription and in the lunette of the portal is a bas-relief of the Madonna and Child to whom Ss. Peter and James are presenting two members of the Orsini family. In a semi-circle around the lunette are four angels with the dove of the Holy Spirit, which is flanked by two roundels depicting the Annunciation, the angel Gabriel and the Virgin, and surmounting the portal in a triangular pediment are the coat-of-arms of the Orsini family. Panel 17th century Spanish, Valencia Tin-glazed earthenware, of which lusterware is one type, was developed in the Middle East in the ninth and tenth centuries to imitate the porcelains produced in China. The opaque white glaze concealed the clay body, which could range from pale buff to brick red, allowing for brilliant effects created by painting the white surface with metal oxides that fired to a range of colors. This technique, as well as the use of metallic lusteran iridescent, coppery painted glazespread throughout the Muslim world, arriving among the potters of Valencia in the thirteenth century. The so-called Hispano-Moresque lusterware, with its fusion of Islamic and Gothic styles and motifs, often in shaped imitating those of metal vessels, was treasured by the elite in Spain during the fifteenth century and exported to the courts of Europe. The Valencian industry declined in the late sixteenth century, as colorful Italian Renaissance maiolica gained in popularity among the

Double Tomb of Don Àlvar Rodrigo de Cabrera, Count of Urgell and His Wife Cecília of Foix. Culture: Catalan. Date: ca. 1300-1350.Documentary evidence suggests that this tomb ensemble was made for Àlvar Rodrigo de Cabrera and his wife, Cecília of Foix, the parents of Ermengol X. The monastery of Bellpuig de les Avellanes was abandoned and badly damaged during the Wars of Succession that began around 1700. When the monastery was reinhabited in the eighteenth century, the church with its burial chapel was reconstructed. Date: ca. 1560-71.Before its arrival in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2000, the imposing modello for an altarpiece of the 'Resurrection' had been correctly attributed to Maso da San Friano as early as 1963, and although it was published in 1967, it has generally escaped scholarly notice. While the main motif of the resurrected Christ is reminiscent of some extant paintings by Maso of this subject, and in particular of his monumental altarpiece at the Santissima Annunziata in Florence, the composition in Maso's Metropolitan drawing is unexpectedly similar to fra' Bartolomeo's 'Salvator Mundi' altarpiece (Galleria Palatina, Florence), dated 1516, and originally painted for the chapel of Salvatore Billi at the Santissima Annunziata.
