Fragment of a Frieze 11th century This panel and panels 39.40.58, .60-62, .64 are believed to have formed a large frieze along the entrance to a prayer hall that served a densely populated residential neighborhood. The frieze was originally painted in red and blue and included the word al-sultan, a title that first occurred in monumental epigraphy in the eleventh century with Seljuq and Ghaznavid rulers. It has been suggested that the friezes inscription originally bore the titles of the Seljuq sultan Malik Shah (r. 1073-92).. Fragment of a Frieze 449596

Stove plate with the fall, anonymous, c. 1575 - c. 1625 Stove plate made of cast iron, divided into two zones. In an oval cartouche, the upper zone has a representation of the fall with Adam and Eva on either side of a tree, in which a snake winds around the trunk. Eva is on the right an arm on the tree. On the left is Adam turned to the middle with an apple in his hand. The lower zone has largely been lost, but seems to have an angel head in the middle. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 The original monument was destroyed in 936, rebuilt, modified throughout the 16th century (with an addition to the nave in 1618), and restored in 1969. Exterior views include the bell tower and general building facades. Most views focus on the architectural sculpture of the Portale delle Donne and the Portale degli Uomini. Interior views in the Medieval core collection focus on a statue of St. Catherine in an aedicule (15th century); an ambo lecturn (pluteus) decorated with the four symbols of the Evangelists (c. 1267); a statue of the Virgin and Child under a sculpted baldachin on the entrance wall of the oratory (14th century) and the main altar composed of sarcophagus fragments of lions and peacocks in low-relief (8th-10th centuries). Central is a performance with the conquest of the Spanish silver fleet by seeing Piet Hein with several ships in the sea and in the background land with a few trees. In the middle hemisphere is the Dutch Lion with raised sword in the Dutch garden. In the semi -rounds on the left the Wapen van Holland with the standing lion. Element from a Stalactite Squinch (Muqarnas) 10th century Probably originally part of a muqarnas, or stalactite squinch, this and other muqarnas elements would have been stacked, in descending size, in the upper corner of a room in order to make the transition to a dome. This, together with objects 38.40.249-38.40.251 are among the earliest known examples of muqarnas, a feature that became quite popular in Islamic architecture in subsequent centuries. Panel Carved in the "Beveled Style" with Remains of Later Polychromy last quarter 10th century This panel belonged to a long horizontal frieze with a continuous undulating pattern. The remnants of blue and red paint and traces of gold leaf are from a later date in antiquity. These remnants indicate that most of the panel's surface would have been vibrantly colored. The adjacent photos show a detail of the panel's colored surface and a possible reconstruction of the original polychrome decoration based on analysis of these remains.. Panel dated 1296 Before becoming sultan in 1296, the Mamluk Husam al-Din Lajin spent a year in hiding at the dilapidated Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo. He vowed to renovate the mosque someday, and an enormous minbar was the result. It was dismantled in the late 19th century and dispersed in several museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A copy based on a traveler's drawing now stands in the mosque..
